This article is the software update history of the Nest Protect, including the dates of each new release, summary of what’s new, changes, and enhancements.
Nest Protect automatically downloads the latest software if it's connected to the internet. You don't need to do anything.
Software updates are rolled out gradually and usually take a few weeks to make it to all Nest Protects. There is a gradual rollout to make sure the process goes smoothly for all our customers. If you notice a new update listed below but it's not on your Nest Protect yet, it should automatically update.
Nest Protect will still warn you in the case of an emergency or a Heads Up alert, even if it isn’t connected to the internet and its software is an older version.
Nest Protect software is tested by independent certification bodies to ensure that it meets the applicable certification standards in countries where it’s sold. Learn more about Nest Protect's certification.
Software update history
Important: With each software version, Nest Protect can fine-tune the sensitivity of its smoke sensor. Smoke sensitivity levels and obscuration measurements are listed for fire safety professionals and building inspectors to confirm local code compliance.
Version 3.6 (named 3.6rc8) - Released March 2025 for 2nd gen Nest Protect
