1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions

Note: This article is about 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions.

  • You have a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription if you have separate subscriptions for each camera in your home.
  • You can only buy 1st gen subscriptions if you don't use a Google Account to sign into the Nest app.

When you get a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription for your Google Nest camera or doorbell, you can use the Nest app to set Activity Zones, get improved activity alerts, and create video clips and timelapses from the video history.

Important: If you purchased 1st gen Nest Aware through one of our partners, their policies might be different than what you see in this article. You should contact the partner for details about your subscription.

Purchases, setup and renewals 

How do I buy a subscription? 

  • You can only purchase a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription for a Nest camera if you haven’t migrated your Nest account to a Google Account.
  • If you already have a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription, your new subscription must be on the same billing cycle. For example, if you’re billed monthly for your current subscription, any additional subscriptions you buy will need to be on a monthly billing cycle as well.
  • Only the Owner of the Nest home can purchase a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription.

Where to purchase a subscription

You can buy a 1st gen subscription with the Nest app or on the Google Store.

1st gen subscriptions might also still be available through our partners. If a partner currently offers a subscription, ask them how to purchase and activate it.

Can I buy a subscription for someone else? 

Subscriptions can’t be transferred to another home or different account. If you have purchased a subscription that was intended for someone in a different Nest home or in a different account, you’ll need to cancel it. 

I bought subscriptions for multiple cameras. Why didn’t I get a discount?

Annual or monthly subscriptions

  • If you purchased your 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions on an annual or monthly basis, you’ll only get a discount if the subscriptions are for cameras in the same home with the same video history length.

Multiple Nest homes

  • If you have more than one home in the Nest app, the first subscription purchased in each home is full price. Any additional subscriptions in the same home will get the discount. You’ll be able to see the discounted subscription price when you check out.

Subscriptions purchased from our partners

Subscriptions included with pre-paid bundles

  • If you purchased a pre-paid Nest Aware bundle, such as a Nest doorbell and Nest Aware bundle, it includes 1-year pre-paid 1st gen Nest Aware service with 5-day video history. It won’t apply towards discounts for multiple cameras and its video history length can’t be changed.

When will my Nest Aware subscription start? 

If you purchased an annual or monthly subscription, your paid subscription will automatically begin after your free trial ends. You don’t need to do anything.

  • If you bought a camera and an annual or monthly subscription together in the Google Store, your subscription will start automatically after your free trial concludes. 
  • If you bought a subscription during your free trial, your subscription will start automatically after your free trial concludes.
  • If you bought a subscription after your free trial, the subscription will start automatically after your purchase.
  • If you purchased a Nest doorbell and 1-year pre-paid Nest Aware bundle, there is no free trial period. Your service starts when you add your camera to the app.
  • If you purchased a subscription from one of our partners, their free trial policy might be different. Contact the partner to learn more.

How do subscription renewals work? 

How renewals work

When you purchase an annual or monthly subscription, renewals occur automatically. Depending on the billing cycle you selected, renewals occur every month or year. The credit card you used to purchase your subscription will be billed automatically, so you don’t need to do anything.

Renewal cancellations

If your credit card has expired when it’s time for a renewal, Nest will send you an email notification. From there you’ll be able to update your payment information. If your payment isn’t received after two billing attempts, your subscription will be cancelled.

If you cancel your subscription, or if your subscription is automatically cancelled due to non-payment, you won’t be able to renew it. All of your video history will be erased. You can purchase a new subscription if you wish to use the service again, but any video history that was erased during cancellation won’t be recovered.

Renewals for pre-paid bundle subscriptions

When you purchase a pre-paid Nest Aware service bundle, such as a Nest doorbell and 1-year pre-paid Nest Aware bundle, you’ll need to purchase a subscription before the end of the pre-paid year in order to continue service.

If you purchased your subscription through one of our partners, their policies for renewing your subscription might be different. Contact the partner to learn more.

How do I check when my pre-paid service ends?

 To check when your pre-paid service ends:

  1. Visit store.google.com.
  2. Tap Account  in the top right corner, then sign in if needed.
  3. Select Subscriptions.

How are subscriptions assigned to my cameras?

If you purchase your subscription directly from Google, it’s done for you automatically.

New subscription for existing camera in your home

If you have a camera that doesn’t have a subscription already added to a Nest home, and then buy a subscription for that camera, the Nest app will assign the subscription to that camera immediately.

New camera and new subscription purchased together

If you buy a camera and subscription at the same time, the subscription will be assigned to the next camera that you add to a Nest home. You’ll need to add that new camera to your home in the Nest app for the new subscription to be assigned to it.

If you already have a non-subscription camera in your Nest home, and then buy a subscription and a new camera at the same time, the Nest app will assign the subscription to the next camera that you add to a Nest home. When you add that new camera to your home in the Nest app, it will be assigned the new subscription, not the camera that is already in your home.

Subscriptions included with pre-paid bundles

If you buy a Nest doorbell and pre-paid Nest Aware service bundle, the Nest app will assign the subscription to the doorbell immediately.

Multiple new cameras with multiple new subscriptions

If you buy multiple cameras and multiple subscriptions at the same time, the store assigns the subscriptions to the new cameras when you add them to your account. If you purchased multiple subscriptions with different video history lengths, Nest will assign the plans with the longer video history lengths before the ones with the shorter lengths.

Cancel or change your subscriptions

How do I cancel a subscription?

You can learn more about how to cancel your subscription in the Google store help center.

Before you cancel or change your subscription, keep the following in mind.

  • If you’ve migrated to a Google Account, you need to have at least one active subscription to keep 1st gen Nest Aware.
  • If you cancel all your 1st gen subscriptions, you won’t be able to sign up for it again, and you’ll lose any video history that wasn’t saved to the app.
  • You can’t add any new 1st gen Nest Aware subscriptions if you’ve migrated to a Google Account, but you can switch to a Nest Aware subscription that covers all cameras in your home for one low price.

How do I switch to a different subscription type?

Depending on the terms of your subscription, you might be able to switch to a different subscription type.

Annual or monthly subscription

Switching to a new subscription type will depend on where you bought your Nest Aware subscription.

If you purchased your subscription directly from Google, the following must be true to switch to a different subscription type:

Pre-paid service bundle

If your camera included a pre-paid Nest Aware subscription as part of the purchase price, then you won’t be able to switch to a different subscription type during the pre-paid period. 

For example, if you purchased a Nest doorbell and Nest Aware bundle from Costco (US), it includes a 1-year pre-paid Nest Aware service with 5-day video history. You won’t be able to change your subscription to a longer video history length with this bundle until after your pre-paid Nest Aware service expires or is cancelled.

Can I move a subscription to a different camera that I own? 

No, the subscription is tied to the camera, so you’ll either need to cancel the subscription and purchase a new one for the other camera, or physically swap your cameras.

Change which camera has a 1st gen Nest Aware subscription

What happens when I cancel my subscription? 

  • Cancellation is immediate and can’t be undone. 
  • You won’t be able to resubscribe to 1st gen Nest Aware if you’ve migrated to a Google Account. 
  • All video history, settings, and preferences related to the subscription will be erased.
  • Clips and timelapses that were created will be saved in your account in the Nest app until they’re manually deleted.

Can I get a prorated refund if I cancel a subscription?

Annual and monthly subscriptions

When you cancel an annual or monthly subscription, you’ll be issued either a prorated refund or prorated credit:

  • If you cancel all of the subscriptions for the cameras in your Nest home, you’ll get a prorated refund.
  • If you will still have one or more active Nest Aware subscriptions in your Nest home, you’ll get a prorated credit applied to your next bill.

Subscriptions included with pre-paid bundles

When you cancel a pre-paid Nest Aware service after 30 days from purchase, such as a Nest doorbell and 1-year pre-paid Nest Aware bundle, there is no prorated refund or prorated credit and cancellation is permanent. You also won’t be able to get the Nest Aware service back if you removed the camera from your account.

Can I switch my subscription to a different credit card?

You can use a new or different credit card with an existing Nest Aware subscription. Go to Manage your subscriptions for complete instructions.
