Where to place a Nest Guard in your home

The Nest app will tell you how to install and set up Google Nest Guard, but here are some additional tips and guidelines about where to place it in your home.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to install Nest Guard near the entrance that you use the most so it’s easy to arm and disarm when you leave or come home. In most homes, that would be near the front door, but if you and your family typically enter through a side or back door, you should place Guard there.

Make sure the motion sensor has a clear view

Nest Guard isn’t just a keypad, it also has a motion sensor, so it needs to be facing towards the middle of the room or where people walk by. Keep its view free from mail, keys or anything else that could block its view.

Find a spot with a good Wi-Fi signal

Nest Guard needs a Wi-Fi internet connection so it can send alerts and notifications to your phone. If it can’t get a solid connection and intermittently disconnects, try moving it a bit. Even a few inches can make a big difference. You can also try moving your Wi-Fi router a bit closer.

Make sure it’s at the right height

Put Nest Guard on a table or low shelf so it’s easy to reach and its motion sensor can see the room. It must be between 28 and 42 inches above the floor. Place it close to the edge of the shelf or table so the motion sensor has a clear view of the room.

If you have a dog under 40 pounds (18 kg) and you want to use Reduced Sensitivity to help avoid false alarms, Guard’s installation requirements are a bit different. However, if you have more than one dog, a cat, bird, or other pet, Reduced Sensitivity may not help reduce false alarms. See the following article for details.

Use an unswitched wall outlet

Nest Guard has a backup battery that will keep it working for up to 12 hours after the power goes out. Even so, you should choose an outlet that’s not controlled by a switch so you don’t accidentally turn off power to Nest Guard. You should also use the included bracket for the plug which will help prevent accidental unplugging.
