How to install the Nest app for Android TV

Note: This article is for users who have not migrated their Nest account to a Google Account. Learn about Nest accounts and whether you have a migrated account in our FAQs about accounts in the Nest app.

The Nest app for Android TV lets you view videos from your Google Nest cameras and Dropcam devices. With Nest Aware, you can also watch each camera’s video history.

You already know you can use a phone or tablet to view your Nest Cam video, but you can also keep an eye on things with your television and the Nest app for Android TV. Whether you’re watching TV or playing a game, it’s easy to flip over and check all your cameras, then go back to what you were doing before.

What the app can do

With the Nest app for Android TV, you can:

  • View the live feed of all the Nest cameras and Dropcam devices in your account
  • Watch up to 4 cameras on one screen, and cycle through any additional cameras in your home
  • Remind you to check Google Nest Protect notifications on your phone or tablet if you have at least one that needs attention.

With a Nest Aware subscription, you can do even more:

  • View the entire video history for each of your Nest cameras
  • Quickly jump forward and backward to events on each camera’s timeline

How to watch video

When you open the Nest app (and select a home, if you have more than one), the home screen shows your cameras.

If you have more than one camera, they’ll appear in alphabetical order according to their “where” labels. Press or swipe left and right on your remote to cycle through all your cameras.

Use the remote to select your camera and view its video full-screen.

View your video history

If your camera has a Nest Aware subscription, you can replay footage from your video history. From the full-screen view, use the on-screen controls to rewind and fast forward to events in your timeline.

Watching multiple cameras at the same time

The Nest app for Android TV takes advantage of your television’s large screen to display up to 4 camera streams in one view.

  • If you have 2 cameras in the same home: you can watch the video streams from both your cameras at once. This is the default view for the app’s home screen, so all you need to do is open the Nest app and start watching.
  • If you have 3 or more cameras in the same home: from the home screen, press or swipe left until you can select All Cameras.

In the All Cameras view, your home’s cameras are displayed in groups of 4. If you have more than 4 cameras, click or swipe left and right to cycle through the groups.

Note: The cameras need to be in the same Nest home. If you have 3 cameras, but 2 are in your first home, and one is in another home, you won’t be able to view all 3 at the same time.

Learn about viewing clips from your video history

Clips aren’t currently available in the Nest app for Android TV. Instead, you can view your saved clips on a computer at home.nest.com.

How to create, view and share clips from your video history >

Note: There is a way to watch clips on your television with Android TV, but it takes a couple extra steps. First, share the clips to a video service like YouTube. Be sure to make the clips private if you want to limit who can access them (for example, Google.com: change the privacy settings for YouTube video). Then open the app that corresponds to your Android TV (like the YouTube app) to watch the clips on your television.

View Nest Protect status

If you have a Nest Protect that needs attention, an icon appears on the Nest app home screen. Open the Nest app on your phone to address the notification.

Note: If you have more than one home in the app, press or swipe to switch homes to check if Nest Protect devices in other homes need attention.

How to switch to another Nest home

If you have more than one home in your account, you can switch between them.

On the home screen of the Nest app, press or swipe left until you access the menu that shows your homes. Select a home to view its cameras.
