Set up and manage Matter-enabled devices in the Google Home app

You can add Matter-enabled devices to the Google Home app and control all of your home devices with just one app.

Note: To connect Google Nest devices including Google Nest Hubs for Matter and other third-party devices that aren't Matter-enabled to the Home app, follow Set up smart devices in the Google Home app for your specific device instead.

What you need

  • A Google Account
  • A home Wi-Fi network
  • For devices that use Thread, you need a Thread border router to complete setup
  • One of the following mobile devices:
    • Android phone or tablet with Android 8.1 or later and Google Play services version 22.48.14 or later
    • iPhone or iPad with iOS 16.5 or later
  • Bluetooth low energy (BLE) 4.2 or higher
  • Latest version of the Google Home app  from the Play Store or App Store.
  • A Matter-enabled smart home device. Look for the Matter logo on the package.
  • A Matter-enabled Google hub to control your device with the Google Home app.

Note: If you don't have a hub, you might be able to add your Matter-enabled device to the Google Home app, but you can't control it.

Set up your Matter-enabled device

Many Matter-enabled devices can be set up directly with the Google Home app. Alternatively, if you set up your device with the manufacturer's app, you can also add your device in the Google Home app and control your device with either app. Note: These instructions don't apply to Google Nest devices.

Set up your third-party Matter-enabled device with the Google Home app
  1. Make sure that your Matter-enabled device is on and in pairing mode, as per the device manufacturer's instructions.
  2. Look for the pop-up notification on your phone. You may need to open the Google Home app first. Tap Scan QR code
    • If you don't get a pop-up notification, open the Google Home app , tap Devices   Add  Matter-enabled device. The app will look for devices to add. If it doesn't find one, it will show a list to choose from. Tap Matter-enabled device.
  3. Scan the Matter QR code of your Matter-enabled device.
    • Hold your phone about 12 cm (5 in) away to scan. Learn more tips for scanning QR codes.
    • If you're unable to scan the QR code, tap Set up without QR code, then enter the setup key. This should be provided with your product and is often on the device itself.
  4. If you are setting up a Matter-enabled device for the first time, select the Google Home app.
  5. Tap I agree to connect the device to your Google Account.
  6. The device will be added to the home that was last selected. If you'd like to, you can move your Matter-enabled device to a different home.
Note: If you don't have a Matter-enabled Google hub, the Google Home app prompts you that a hub is required to control your Matter-enabled device through the Google Home app. You can finish adding your Matter-enabled device to the Google Home app, however you won't be able to control it from the app or with Google Assistant until you add a Matter-enabled Google hub to the Home app.
  7. Once the device connects successfully, select a room where your Matter-enabled device will be located and name your device.

Set up your third-party Matter-enabled device in the manufacturer's app and share it with the Google Home app

  1. Set up your Matter-enabled device in the manufacturer's app (if one is available). If you're unable to complete setup in the manufacturer's app, contact the device manufacturer for assistance.
  2. After you complete the setup, follow the manufacturer instructions to share device access with the Google Home app.
