Note: Google Home currently supports a single account per streaming service. 

You'll hear different music based on the partner and your subscription.

  • Spotify Free - You'll hear a station of songs inspired by the song/album/artist you requested (free radio service).
  • Google Play Music Premium, Spotify Premium, Deezer+, and Deezer Family - You'll hear specific songs/albums/artists along with music based on genre, mood or activity or your personal playlists.

Basic voice commands for all content providers

Google Play Music (Subscription service) 

There are a couple ways to listen to music using Google Play Music.

Google Play Music subscription

Get all content on demand. Hear specific songs/albums/artists along with music based on genre, mood or activity or your personal playlists.

Uploaded/purchased music from your library

You can listen to on demand songs/albums/artists you’ve purchased on Google Play Music and uploaded to your library. You can also listen to your playlists based on the songs in your library.

  • If you also have a subscription, you need to explicitly ask to play songs, albums, and artists from your library using “Play <song/album/artist/playlist> from my library” or “Play my <song/album/artist/playlist>." Otherwise you’ll hear subscription on demand content. 
  • Note: The "Play <genre/mood/activity>" basic voice command isn't supported for uploaded/purchased music. 
To do this... Say this: 'Ok Google' or 'Hey Google,' then...
Play purchased/uploaded music

"Play <song/album/artist/playlist> from my library"

Note: You don't need to say “from my library” unless you have a subscription and want to hear purchased/uploaded music instead of subscription content.

  • It may take ~20 minutes for the liked/disliked song to appear in the Google Play Music app or Google Play Music website

Important:  
  • Currently, you can't directly play uploaded or purchased Google Play Music content on Google Home. However, you can add your uploaded and purchased content to a playlist and play that playlist using the 'Hey Google, play <name> playlist' voice command. 
  • Currently, you can't request podcasts from Google Play Music. (E.g. 'Hey Google, play my Google Play Music podcast' isn't supported.) Instead you can say 'Hey Google, play <podcast name> podcast.'
Spotify (Free and Premium)

To listen to Spotify on your Google Home, you must link your Spotify account. There are a couple ways to listen to music using Spotify.

Spotify Premium

If you have a Spotify Premium account you can play content on demand. You can hear specific songs/albums/artists along with music based on genre, mood or activity, Spotify’s curated playlists and your personal playlists. 

Spotify Free

If you don't have a Spotify Premium account,  you'll hear a station of songs inspired by the song/album/artist or personal playlists you asked for.  You can't hear specific songs, albums, artists or personal playlists on demand, but you can ask for music based on genre, mood or activity or for Spotify-curated playlists.

Spotify Free also offers different listening experiences if you're casting to TVs or speakers, giving you more ways to enjoy your music. Here's more about playing music on TVs, speakers and groups.

What you'll hear

Here's what to expect if you're using Spotify Free vs Spotify Premium on a specific device:

  Spotify Free on Google Home or audio group will play: Spotify Free on remote Chromecast-built in audio device (i.e. Chromecast Audio) will play: Spotify Free on remote Chromecast-built in video device (i.e. Chromecast) will play: Spotify Premium on all devices (Google Home, audio groups, audio devices and video devices)

In addition to basic voice commands, you use these advanced commands when listening to Spotify Free or Premium.

It may take Google Home several hours to recognise a newly-created, private playlist.

Note: Currently, you can't request podcasts from Spotify. (E.g. 'Hey Google, play my Spotify podcast' isn't supported.) Instead you can say 'Hey Google, play <podcast name> podcast.' 

Deezer (Deezer Premium+ and Deezer Family) 

A Deezer Premium+ or Deezer Family subscription is required to play music using Google Home. Deezer Free is not supported.

Listen to music with Voice Match

If you've set up Voice Match, guests and housemates can't currently access your library content. However, you can give them access by uploading your music to their account.

If you haven't set up Voice Match, guests and housemates can access music from your library.

Set your default music service on Google Home

Here’s how to connect your music and pick a favourite music service as your default. This default service will be used first when possible.

Select your default music service on Google Home
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  3. Tap Music .
  4. To choose your default service, tap the radio button to the left of the service.
  5. Linking functionality:
    1. For Google Play Music, your account is automatically linked when you link your Google Account to Google Home. 
    2. For Spotify, you will need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap LINK.
      • Sign in or sign up for the service and complete the sign-in flow.
      • To unlink an account, tap UNLINK

Available music services:

  1. Google Play Music 
  2. Spotify 
  3. Deezer

 

Note: For all services, Google Home currently supports a single account per streaming service.

Other ways to control music

You can also control music by touching the top surface of Google Home or by using the Google Home app. 

From the Google Home device

Turn up the volume 

Swipe clockwise on the top of the device.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media. You can adjust alarms and timers volume anytime in the the Google Home app.

Turn down the volume 

Swipe counterclockwise on the top of the device.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.

Start your request  Press and hold down on the top of the device

Turn up the volume 

Tap on right side of Mini.

To reach maximum volume, tap to volume level 10.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.

Turn down the volume 

Tap on left side of Mini. 

10 total taps will mute all audio except your Google Assistant.

Note: This only adjusts the volume of media and your Google Assistant. At volume level 0, all media will be muted but your Google Assistant will still speak at a minimum level.  It doesn’t adjust the volume of alarms and timers.

Play / Pause / Stop   

Note: You can't tap on the top of Mini to control media.

Instead, say "Ok Google <pause/play/stop>".

 
Start your request 

Note: You can't press and hold the top of Mini to start a request with your Assistant.

Instead, say "Ok Google" to start your request.

 
From the Google Home app
  1. Make sure that your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the top-right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices Devices to see available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home.

On the device card, you will see the following information for the current music session:

  • Content provider 
  • Title (song name/show episode name/radio station programme)
  • Artist (if available)
  • Collection (playlist/album/show series/radio station) (if available)

You can also pause/resume, stop and control Google Home’s internal speaker from the device card. 

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure your music provider accounts are linked to Google Home. 
  • If you're not hearing the music you expect, be more specific with your request. 
    1. Add “...by <Artist>” to your request . (Example: "Ok, Google. Play a song by Sia.")
    2. Add  "... album, playlists, song" to your request. (Example: “Ok, Google. Play my morning rock playlist.”
  • If you want to listen to music that's not from your default service, add “...on <music service>” to your request.
