Enjoy music from popular music services by artist, song, genre, album, playlist, mood, or activity.
Note: Google Home currently supports a single account per streaming service. 

Basic voice commands for all content providers

To do this... Say "Ok Google" or “Hey Google,” then...
Request a song "Play <song name>", "Play <song name> by <artist name> ", “Play <song name> on <music service>”
Request an artist "Play <artist name>", Play <artist name>" on <music service>”
Request an album "Play <album name>", "Play <album name> by <artist name>",  "Play <album name> by <artist name> on <music service>”
Play music based on genre/mood/activity "Play classical music", "Play happy music", "Play music for cooking", “Play <genre> on <music service>”
Play personalized suggested content from chosen service "Play some music", “Play <genre> music on <music service>”
Play music on your speakers, TV, or video device. Note: Device linking is required. "Play music on my living room TV", "Play <genre> on my bedroom speakers"
Pause  "Pause", "Pause the music"
Resume "Resume", "Continue playing"
Stop "Stop ", "Stop the music"
Play next song   “Next”, “Skip”, "Next song"

Advanced voice commands for free and subscription services

Google Play Music (Free radio service & subscription service) 
  • You must purchase a Google Play Music premium subscription to hear specific songs, albums, and artists. Note: If you don't have a premium subscription, you will hear a station of songs inspired by or similar to the songs/albums/artists you selected.  
  • The Google Account you used to set up Google Home is the default Google Play Music account associated with Google Home. This can't be changed.
To do this... Say this: "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then...
Play curated playlist from your library "Play <named playlist>"
Play album "Play <named album>"
Play previous song  “Back”, “Previous”, 
Skip forward "Skip forward <X> secs"
Shuffle “Shuffle”
Repeat song "Play it again", "Play this song again", "Repeat the song" 
Play playlist in a loop   "Repeat on/off" 

Like or dislike a song 

Note:
  • It may take ~20 minutes for the liked/disliked song to appear in the Google Play Music app or Google Play Music website
  • If you dislike a song, the song will be skipped
"I like this song," "Thumbs up"

"I dislike this song," "Thumbs down"
 
Important:  
  • Currently, you can't directly play uploaded or purchased Google Play Music content on Google Home. However, you can add your uploaded and purchased content to a playlist and play that playlist using the "Hey Google, play <name> playlist" voice command. 
  • Currently, you can't request podcasts from Google Play Music. (Ex. "Hey Google, play my Google Play Music podcast" isn't supported.) Instead you can say "Hey Google, play <podcast name> podcast".
Pandora (Free radio service)

Note: For Pandora, you'll hear a station of songs inspired by or similar to the songs/albums/artists you selected. You can't request specific songs/albums/artists.

To listen to Pandora on Google Home, you must link your Pandora account.

To do this... Say this: "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then...
Play personalized radio from Pandora  "Play my shuffle", "Play my shuffle radio"

Play personalized radio based on songs you've thumbed on Pandora 

Note: To play your thumbprint radio, you must have saved several stations and thumbed up several songs in order for Pandora to understand what you like.

"Play my Thumbprint radio"
Play playlist "Play classic country", "Play <Pandora station name>"
Like/Dislike a song from Pandora "Thumbs up", "Thumbs down", "I like this song" 
YouTube Music (Requires YouTube Red subscription)

Note:

  • You must purchase a YouTube Red subscription to hear specific songs, albums, and artists. This subscription is required for most functionality. 
  • The Google Account you used to set up Google Home is the default YouTube Music account associated with Google Home. To change the YouTube Music account associated with Google Home, you must unlink the Google Account that is used to set up Google Home. Here’s how to unlink a Google Account from Google Home and link a new Google Account. 
To do this... Say this: "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then...
Like/Dislike a song "I like/dislike this song" "Thumbs up/down"
Like/Dislike the current station "Save/Unsave this station", "Follow/Unfollow this station"
Play previous song  “Back”, “Previous”, 

Skip forward

"Skip forward <X> seconds"
Shuffle “Shuffle”
Repeat song "Play it again", "Play this song again" 

 

Important: Currently, if you say "Ok Google, stop casting" or "Ok Google, stop" when playing from YouTube Music, it will only pause the content. To stop content, you'll need to manually end the cast session from the Google Home app. 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see your available Google Home devices.
  3. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home you're currently casting from.
  4. Tap Stop Casting.
Spotify (Requires premium account linking)

Note: You must have a Spotify premium account to play Spotify on Google Home. 

To listen to Spotify on your Google Home, you must link your Spotify account.

To do this... Say this: "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then...
Play your liked songs from your Spotify library "Play my songs", “Play my library” 
Play playlist "Play Discover Weekly", "Play <playlist name>"
Like/Dislike a song "I like/dislike this song" "Thumbs up/down"
Like/Dislike the current station "Save/Unsave this station", "Follow/Unfollow this station"
Play previous song  “Back”, “Previous”
Skip forward "Skip forward <X> secs"
Shuffle “Shuffle”
Repeat song "Play it again", "Play this song again" 
Play playlist in a loop   "Repeat on/off" 

 

Note: Currently, you can't request podcasts from Spotify. (Ex. "Hey Google, play my Spotify podcast" isn't supported.) Instead you can say "Hey Google, play <podcast name> podcast." 

Set your default music service on Google Home

Here’s how to connect your music and pick a favorite music service as your default. This default service will be used first when possible.

Select your default music service on Google Home

 

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. In the top left corner of the Home screen, tap Menu  and then Music .
  3. To choose your default service, tap the radio button to the left of the service.
  4. Linking functionality:
    1. For Google Play Music and YouTube Red, your accounts are automatically linked when you set up Google Home. 
    2. For Spotify and Pandora, you will need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap LINK.
      • Sign in or sign up for the service and complete the sign-in flow.
      • To unlink an account, tap UNLINK

Available music services:

  1. Google Play Music 
  2. YouTube Music 
  3. Spotify 
  4. Pandora 

Note: For all services,  Google Home currently supports a single account per streaming service.

Other ways to control music

You can also control music by touching the top surface of Google Home or by using the Google Home app. 

From the Google Home device
To do this: Touch the device like this: Image
Play / Pause / Stop    Tap once on the top of the device
Turn up the volume  Swipe clockwise on the top of the device. 
Turn down the volume  Swipe counterclockwise on the top of the device. 
Start your request  Press and hold down on the top of the device
From the Google Home app
  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app .
  3. In the top right corner of the Home screen, tap Devices  to see available Google Home devices. 
  4. Scroll to find the device card for the Google Home.

On the device card, you will see the following information for the current music session:

  • Content provider 
  • Title (song name / show episode name / radio station program)
  • Artist (if available)
  • Collection (playlist / album / show series / radio station) (if available)

You can also pause/resume, stop, and control Google Home’s internal speaker from the device card. 

Troubleshooting

  1. Make sure your music provider accounts are linked to Google Home. 
  2. If you're not hearing the music you expect, be more specific with your request. 
    1. Add “...by <Artist>” to your request . (Example: "Ok, Google. Play a song by Sia.")
    2. Add  "... album, playlists, song" to your request. (Example: “Ok, Google. Play my morning rock playlist.”
  3. If you want to listen to music that's not from your default service, add “...on <music service>” to your request.
