Set up & manage Routines

Get daily help with your personal routines. Simply say one command and your Google Assistant will do multiple things. 
My Day is now the Good Morning Routine. 

Note: If Digital Wellbeing is enabled, this feature may be restricted or blocked by either Downtime or Filters. Please go here for more information on Digital Wellbeing.

Step 1. Set up personalization

One person using Google Home

Personal results must be turned on to hear personal information, like calendar events and reminders.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the bottom right corner of the Home screen, tap Account .
  4. Verify that the Google Account  listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name and email address.
  5. In the bottom left corner of the screen, tap Home
  6. Tap the device you want to set up personal results for and then Settings .
  7. Turn Personal results on On or off Off

Note: If multiple people are using the same Google Home device, everyone who wants to hear personal information must link their Google Account and voice to Google Home, including the person who set up Google Home. 

Multiple people using Google Home
If multiple users are using the same Google Home, everyone who wants to hear personal info on Google Home must link their Google Account and voice to Google Home, even the person who set up Google Home. If you've already linked your Google Account and voice, skip these steps. 
  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the bottom right corner, tap Account .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home. To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap SettingsSettings icon  Assistant tab Tap Voice match plus.
  5. Make sure any devices you want to link your voice to are checked.
  6. Tap Continue I agree.
  7. Follow the steps.
  8. To hear personal information, you must turn on Personal results. Tap I agree and proceed with the Voice Match setup.
  9. To invite others to set up Voice Match for tailored results, tap INVITE, choose your communication method, and send the invite. To skip this step, tap No thanks.
 

Step 2. Set up a Routine 

Use a ready-made Routine

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the bottom right corner of the Home screen, tap Account .
  4. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  5. Tap Settings   and then ​Assistant tab and then Routines and then choose a Routine and then tap the box next to an action and then Done .

Note: You can adjust the settings for individual actions by tapping Settings gear next to the action. 

Good morning

Say "Hey Google, good morning"...

And your Assistant can:

  • Take your phone off silent (only when initiated via an Android device). 
  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more
  • Tell you about today's:
    • Weather 
    • Commute
    • Calendar
    • Reminders
  • Adjust the media volume

And then play:

  • Music 
  • News 
  • Radio 
  • Podcast where you left off
  • Audiobook where you left off 
  • Nothing

Bedtime

Say "Hey Google, bedtime"...

And your Assistant can:

  • Put your phone on silent (only when initiated via an Android device). 
  • Tell you about tomorrow's:
    • Weather
    • First calendar event
  • Set an alarm. 
  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more
  • Adjust the media volume

And then play:

  • Music 
    • Set a sleep timer for X minutes (you must be playing music)
  • Sleep sounds. Note: Sleep sounds will play for one hour if not turned off. 
  • Nothing

Leaving home

Say "Hey Google, I’m leaving" ...

And your Assistant can:

  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more 

I'm home

Say "Hey Google, I'm home"...

And your Assistant can:

  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more 
  • Broadcast to Google Homes that are in your home
  • Tell you home (location-based) reminders
  • Adjust the media volume

And then play:

  • Music 
  • News 
  • Radio 
  • Podcasts
  • Audiobooks
  • Nothing

 Commuting to work

Say "Hey Google, let's go to work"...

Note: Must be initiated via an Android or iOS device. Not supported on Home devices.

And your Assistant can:

  • Tell you about today's:
    • Commute
    • Weather
    • Calendar
    • Reminders
  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more 
  • Adjust the media volume

And then play:

  • Music
  • News
  • Radio 
  • Podcast 
  • Nothing

Commuting home

Say "Hey Google, let's go home"...

Note: Must be initiated via an Android or iOS device. Not supported on Home devices.

And your Assistant can:

  • Tell you about your commute
  • Adjust lights, plugs, thermostats, and more 
  • Send texts
  • Read unread texts
  • Broadcast to Google Home that you're on the way home
  • Adjust the media volume

And then play:

  • Music
  • News
  • Radio 
  • Podcast 
  • Nothing

Create a Custom Routine

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Google Home device.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. In the bottom right corner of the Home screen, tap Account .
  4. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  5. Tap Settings  and then Assistant tab and then Routines and then add_routine .
  6. Under “When…”
    1. Tap Add commands and then add_routine and then enter the phrase you want to say to trigger the Routine and then Ok. 
    2. Tap Back.
  7. Under “ My Assistant should...”
    1. Tap Add action and then Enter what the Assistant should do. You can enter any Google Assistant command or choose from popular actions and then Add. Note: You can't assign multiple voice queries to an action.
  8. [Optional] Under “And then play...”
    1. Tap Add media.
    2. Tap the circle next to the media source. Note: You can customize what plays by tapping Settings gear next to the source.
    3. Tap Add and then Done.

Schedule a Custom Routine

You can schedule Custom Routines to automatically start on your smart speaker. Just set the desired day and time. 

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. In the bottom right corner of the Home screen, tap Account .
  3. Verify that the Google Account that is listed is the one linked to Google Home.  To switch accounts, click the triangle to the right of the account name.
  4. Tap Settings   and then ​Assistant tab and then Routines and then add_routine .
  5. Under “When...”

    1. Tap Add commands and then plus and then enter the phrase you want to say to trigger the Routine and then Back.

    2. Tap Set a time and day (optional) and then Choose a time for this Routine and then Back.

    3. Choose a schedule under Choose which days it should repeat.

    4. Select which speaker under Choose which speaker will start it.

    5. You can choose whether you want to get notified on your phone when it starts by checking the box.

    6. Tap Back.

  6. Under “ My Assistant should...”

    1. Tap Add action and then Enter what the Assistant should do. You can enter any Google Assistant command or choose from popular actions and then Add.
      Note: You can't assign multiple voice queries to an action.

  7. [Optional] Under “And then play...”

    1. Tap Add media.

    2. Tap the circle next to the media source. Note: You can customize what plays by tapping Settings gear next to the source.

    3. Tap Add and then Done.

  8. In the top right corner tap Done.
