Impressions greatly reduced since 15 Feb? Is this something to do with the interface update?

Hi,

I am running a number of display and video ads on my account and since the 15th of Feb 2020 I have seen a dramatic decrease in the number of impressions I am getting.

I have not changed anything within these campaigns yet my results have gone from, on average, 20,000 p/d to less than 1,000.

This seems to have happened around the same time as the user interface was updated. Is there something I'm missing as I haven't received any emails regarding changes/updates?

thanks in advance!

Hi Thom,

This is an interesting situation. There were no feature changes to Google Ads on February 15th. Below you will find ideas on what to look into to determine the reason for the impression decline. If these ideas don't yield any results then I recommend you determine where the decrease in impressions is occurring to better understand how to fix it (see the bottom list).

  • Check warnings and alerts - there may be an issue preventing you from showing as frequently.
  • Review ad approval status - It's possible that one or two high traffic ads were disapproved.
  • Frequency caps - you have the option to use frequency caps in both display and video campaigns. If the caps were reached then impressions will drop. Review these.
  • Audience size - if you are remarketing then you are targeting an audience. If the audience size decreases then impressions can decrease. For example, if you are using audiences created with Google Analytics and that connection is broke or the rules changed for that audience it would impact the ads.
  • Update monthly budget - if your payments are setup through invoicing then it's possible that you have reached, or are very close to, your target budget (more info here)
  • Review change history - even though you didn't change anything it's always worth a quick check to see if something was updated

Review impressions before and after February 15th for the following segments to see where the decrease occurred.
Hopefully that helps!
