View or change campaign network settings

Google Ads Editor 1.8 supports the latest updates to audience targeting. Previous versions of Google Ads Editor will not support the new targeting methods. To avoid errors when downloading, viewing, and assigning your audiences, it's recommended to upgrade to Google Ads Editor 1.8.

Google Ads Editor supports the following Google Ads campaign types:

  • Search
  • Search - Mobile app installs
  • Display
  • Display - Smart,
  • Display - Mobile app installs
  • Display - Gmail
  • Shopping
  • Video
  • Video - Bumper ad
  • Video - Drive conversions
  • Video - Outstream
  • App (Universal App)

You can view or change your campaign type in Campaigns or with Google Ads Editor export and import files. Not all campaign types can be changed once the campaign has been created and posted.

Edit the campaign type for existing campaigns

To update your campaign type, choose one of the following options:

Option 1: In Campaigns, select one or more campaigns in the data view. In the edit panel, select a new campaign type under "Campaign type." If applicable, enable or disable the "Include search partners" option (available for campaigns targeting the Search Network). Learn more about editing campaign settings.

Option 2: In a CSV import file or the "Make multiple changes" tool, include the "Campaign type" column and enter the campaign type. Here are some tips for using this option:

  • Campaign type values: Include one of the following values in the “Campaign type” column: Search, Search - Mobile app installs, Display,  Display - Smart, Display - Mobile app installs, Display - Gmail, Shopping, Video, Video - Bumper ad, Video - Drive conversions, Video - Outstream, Universal app.
  • “Networks” column: If “Campaign type” isn’t specified, “Networks” will be used to determine the campaign type. The Networks field may include “Search Partners” or “Display Network.”

Changes to your campaign type

Like the Google Ads online interface, Google Ads Editor only allows certain changes to your campaign type. The table below shows the changes that you can make for each campaign type.

If an existing campaign is this type... ... then you can make these changes.
Search
  • Enable or disable "Include search partners"
  • Enable or disable “Display Network” as a network option.
Display
  • None
Search - Mobile app installs
  • Enable or disable "Include search partners"
Display - Mobile app installs
  • None
Shopping
  • Enable or disable "Include search partners"

Specify campaign types for new campaigns

When you create a new campaign in Google Ads Editor, the following campaign types are available:

  • Search
  • Search - Mobile app installs
  • Display
  • Display - Smart
  • Display - Mobile app installs
  • Display - Gmail
  • Shopping
  • Video
  • Video - Bumper ad
  • Video - Drive conversions
  • Video - Outstream
  • App (Universal App)
     

Search - Mobile app installs campaigns can only be created within the Google Ads web interface.

You can change a newly created campaign's type until you post the campaign for the first time. To see the changes that you can make after you've posted the campaign, refer to the "Changes to your campaign type" table above.

By default, new campaigns use the default campaign type specified in Tools > Settings (Windows) or Google Ads Editor > Preferences (Mac). You can change your default campaign settings at any time.

Special requirements for Search campaigns

Search campaigns have the following restrictions:

  • Ad groups can contain keywords, placements, and search-eligible user lists, but they cannot contain topics, Display only user lists, interest categories, genders, or ages.
  • Placements cannot have bids or bid adjustments.
  • The ad group-level "Flexible reach" setting for placements must be "Target and bid."

To ensure that your campaigns include the appropriate settings, Google Ads Editor shows warning messages for any incorrect targeting.
