What your Gemini mobile app can do

You can type, talk, or use a photo to chat with Gemini. You can do things like:

Learn in new ways and with a deeper understanding of an open ended topic through back and forth conversation.
Ask questions about your surroundings. In the Gemini app, tap Camera , take a photo, and ask questions about it.
Get help with writing, correcting grammar, and translating.
Get inspiration for activities to do and visualize your plans on a map.
Summarize or get an overview of a topic in any format you want, like a list, table, or chart.
Ask Gemini to search your Gmail to find the information you are looking for, like key details from emails about an upcoming trip.
Create a custom itinerary including flights and hotels based on your specific needs, like the destination, date, duration, and price.
On Android when you use Gemini as your mobile assistant:
- You can ask questions related to what’s on your screen, like to summarize a webpage or get more info about something in a picture . Just activate Gemini over any app, including Chrome, tap Add this screen , and then ask your questions.
- Use your voice to take quick actions, like setting an alarm or timer, calling your mom, or turning on your lights.

Tip: Gemini is still learning, so it might not always be able to help. If Gemini can’t help with something Google Assistant can do, you can switch back to Google Assistant.

How your Gemini mobile app & Google Assistant work together on Android phones

On your Android phone, when you opt in to use Gemini, it will replace Google Assistant as the primary assistant on your phone. When Gemini is your mobile assistant, it can help you with some of the same tasks as Google Assistant. Some familiar features from Google Assistant may not be supported in Gemini, which is still evolving. Devices where the Gemini mobile app is unavailable, like Smart Displays and watches, will still use Google Assistant.

Tip: If a feature you rely on isn’t supported in your Gemini mobile app, you can switch back to Google Assistant.

How Gemini and Google Assistant use your data

When Gemini and Google Assistant work together within your Gemini mobile app, your activity will be saved in your Gemini Apps Activity (if on) and used as described in the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice. When Google Assistant powers features or devices outside of your Gemini mobile app, your activity will be saved in your Web & App Activity (if on). Google Assistant features in your Gemini mobile app

On Android, your Gemini mobile app gets help from Google Assistant for some familiar quick voice action features. You can talk to Gemini with “Hey Google” & Voice Match, powered by Google Assistant. On some devices, you can also complete certain tasks, like answering a call or snoozing an alarm, with quick phrases that allow you to skip saying “Hey Google.”

Gemini is still learning, so Google Assistant will help power some familiar quick voice action features. This includes prompts like when you ask it to:

Create or modify alarms and timers.
Make phone calls, send messages, and read incoming messages.
Control your device, like turn on your flashlight or bluetooth, or open an app.
Control your lights, home security, and other smart home devices.
Broadcast messages on connected devices in your home.
Read a web page out loud (Pixel 8 or later).
Get help with your Pixel by saying “Help me with my Pixel” (Pixel 8 or later).
Set reminders and create calendar events.

Turn on your Workplace extension

You can find the relevant Google Assistant settings that support these features in your Gemini mobile app settings. To change these settings:

Open the Gemini app.
At the top, tap your Profile picture or initial Settings Google Assistant features in Gemini.
Choose the setting you want to change.

Note: If a feature you rely on from Google Assistant isn’t supported in Gemini, you can switch back to Google Assistant.

Use your voice to get help from Gemini with “Hey Google” and Voice Match, powered by Google Assistant

You can use your voice to get help from your Gemini mobile app with “Hey Google” and Voice Match, powered by Google Assistant.

When your phone is unlocked, “Hey Google” lets you chat to your Gemini mobile app hands-free.
With “Hey Google” and Voice Match turned on, you can also get some hands-free help with quick voice actions (like setting timers) when your phone is locked, if your lock screen setting is turned on.
When your phone is locked, you can also quickly start a chat with your Gemini mobile app using “Hey Google,” but may need to unlock your phone to get Gemini’s response.

If you’re already using “Hey Google” & Voice Match for Google Assistant on your Android device when you opt-in to use your Gemini mobile app, you can start using “Hey Google” to access Gemini right away.

To turn on “Hey Google” & Voice Match:

On your Android phone, open your Gemini mobile app.
Tap your Profile picture or initial Settings Google Assistant features in Gemini “Hey Google” & Voice Match.
Turn on Hey Google.
To set up Voice Match, follow the prompts so Google Assistant can recognize when you say “Hey Google.”
- To view or delete the audio clips you recorded during Voice Match setup, go to g.co/assistant/enrollment-clips.

To turn off “Hey Google”:

On your Android phone, open your Gemini mobile app.
Tap your Profile picture or initial Settings Google Assistant features in Gemini “Hey Google” & Voice Match.
Turn off Hey Google.
- To remove your Voice Match model from your device, tap Delete Voice Match model. You’ll have to set up Voice Match again if you want to turn “Hey Google” back on.

How Google Assistant powers “Hey Google” & Voice Match for your Gemini mobile app

You can use your voice to get help from your Gemini mobile app with “Hey Google” and Voice Match, powered by Google Assistant.

When “Hey Google” is turned on, Google Assistant is designed to wait in standby mode until it detects an activation, like when it hears “Hey Google.” When in standby mode, Google Assistant won’t send what you are saying to Google or anyone else. Once Google Assistant detects an activation, and recognizes it’s you with Voice Match, it exits standby mode and sends your request to Google servers. This can also happen if there is a noise that sounds like “Hey Google.”

“Hey Google” requires Voice Match to recognize it’s you. If you’ve consented to set up Voice Match, Google Assistant will create a unique model of your voice from clips you record during setup. This voice model is created on Google’s servers and then stored only on the devices where you’ve turned on Voice Match. When your device detects “Hey Google,” Google Assistant may send that detected audio and your voice model to Google servers temporarily to compare and determine if it’s you. Google deletes the voice model and comparison data from its servers immediately after processing. Keep in mind: a similar voice or recording could cause Voice Match to think it’s you. If you later decide Voice Match isn’t for you, you can remove your Voice Match model from your Android phone or all your Assistant-connected devices from your “Hey Google” & Voice Match setting (accessible through your Gemini settings or Google Assistant settings).

When you use “Hey Google” and Voice Match for your Gemini mobile app, Google Assistant detects the activation, recognizes you with Voice Match, routes your query to Gemini, and helps Gemini to fulfill your request if it is a quick voice action feature that Gemini is still learning to handle directly.

If you’re already using “Hey Google” and Voice Match for Google Assistant on your Android device when you opt-in to use your Gemini mobile app, you can start using “Hey Google” and Voice Match to access Gemini right away.

Where Google Assistant powers other features on your phone

Even when you opt-in to use your Gemini mobile app as your primary assistant from Google on your phone, some features on your device will continue to be powered directly by Google Assistant. This includes:

When you get info and updates from At a Glance.
When you use the mic in the Google Maps app search bar, and when you activate Google Assistant while navigating, such as by tapping the on-screen mic or saying “Hey Google”, and when you are using Google Assistant driving mode.
- Tip: You can use Gemini to start navigation in Google Maps. Google Assistant helps you when navigation begins.
When you access Google Assistant from Android Auto by connecting your phone to your car display.
When you use the mic in the Waze app search bar, and when you activate Google Assistant with the Waze app in the foreground.
On Gboard, when you use Assistant voice typing.
When you get Android notifications from Google Assistant devices.

Gemini will not replace Google Assistant on your other devices, even if you opt-in to use it as your mobile assistant. On other non-mobile devices, including Smart Displays, smart speakers, TVs, cars, smart watches, headphones, and earbuds with Google Assistant built in, and Pixel Tablets, Google Assistant will continue to respond to “Hey Google.”

Tip: If a feature you rely on from Google Assistant isn’t supported in Gemini, you can switch back to Google Assistant.

Some features & services from Google Assistant are not supported in Gemini

When you have Gemini turned on, some features and services you used in Google Assistant aren’t supported. This includes:

Media service providers: Podcasts, news and radio stations, and third-party music providers aren’t currently supported in Gemini.
Routines: Starting a Routine in Gemini isn’t supported. On Android phones, shortcuts to start a Routine and Routines attached to alarms in the Clock app no longer work.
- You can still start a Routine with Google Assistant on Home devices, like your speakers and Smart Displays.
Interpreter mode: Switch back to Google Assistant to use Interpreter mode.

Note: Gemini is still learning. If a feature you rely on isn’t supported in your Gemini mobile app, you can switch back to Google Assistant.
