Learn about the updates to phone subscriptions & device protection

Here’s the latest information on our phone subscription and device protection programs.

Learn about Google Fi phone subscriptions

The phone subscription program of Google Fi is currently available only for existing subscribers.

New subscriptions
We don’t offer new phone subscriptions at this time.
Current subscribers
At the end of your current 2-year subscription, you can renew your active phone subscription or upgrade to a new Pixel A-series phone. To manage your subscription, Google Fi sends you an email with a custom link.

Learn about device protection

For Pixel phones
  • New purchases: Device protection is no longer sold for Pixel phones through Google Fi. For protection options, we recommend Pixel Care+. You can add this coverage within 60 days of your purchase either through an email or the Google Fi app.
  • Current plans: If you have a Google Fi device protection plan for your Pixel, your current coverage remains active and isn’t affected.
For other phones
Device protection is still available for purchase for eligible non-Pixel phones.

The Google Fi phone subscription program includes:

  • A phone
  • Phone upgrade after 2 years
  • Pixel Care+ coverage (optional add-on)

What’s included in the subscription program

Phone

Get a phone at a discounted rate.

Pixel Care+ coverage (optional add-on)

Protect against accidental damage, loss or theft (except in NY), and out-of-warranty mechanical breakdown.

Pixel Care+ is optional. Without it, if something happens to your phone, you’re still responsible for the phone subscription cost. Learn more about Pixel Care+.

Phone upgrade

After 2 years, upgrade to the next phone that's part of the subscription program at its monthly rate. Monthly subscription rate may vary depending on device upgrade. Learn more about how to upgrade your phone.

Understand your charges

Monthly subscription billing

Your subscription charges are included on your plan’s monthly bill.

  1. Open the Google Fi website or Google Fi app .
  2. Select Billing and then Your statement.
  3. In “Standard monthly charges,” under “Phone subscription,” select View details.

Taxes

Taxes for the discounted price of your device are due at the time of purchase and reflected on your bill. You may owe more in taxes if you exit the subscription early and are no longer eligible for the discounted price.

Manage, cancel, or transfer your subscription

Manage subscription

You can find and manage details of your phone subscription, like device information and upgrade timeline within your Google Fi account:

  1. Open the Google Fi website or Google Fi app .
  2. Select Account.
  3. Under “Devices,” select the subscription phone.
To manage group plans:

To manage individual plans:

Cancel subscription

After you cancel your subscription, we charge the credit or debit card on your account the remaining amount owed on your phone at regular price. You can keep or cancel device protection.

Plan owners can cancel subscriptions within the Google Fi account:

  1. Open the Google Fi website.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Select Account.
  4. Under “Devices,” select the subscription phone and then Cancel subscription.
  5. To complete cancellation and find an estimate of what you’ll be charged, follow the cancellation steps.

Tip: If you change your mind after you cancel your subscription, until your next billing date, you can reinstate your subscription in the same location in your account.

Transfer subscription

Within 30 days of purchase, if you’re the owner of a group plan, you can transfer your subscription to another member of your plan.

After the 30-day window, you can’t transfer a subscription to another group or individual.

Cancel or pause your Google Fi service

Cancel Google Fi service

If Google Fi service is cancelled, the cancellation impacts subscription eligibility.

Plan owner cancels service

If a plan owner cancels Google Fi service, we charge the remaining amount owed for all active subscription phones on their account at the regular price. Group members can transfer their phone numbers to a new provider or their own Google Fi plan.

Group plan member cancels service

If a group plan member cancels service, the number of active lines on the account may fall below the number of subscriptions. If this happens, we notify the group plan owner. If not corrected, the monthly phone charge increases to the standard financing rate.

Pause Google Fi service

You can temporarily pause your Google Fi service. While your service is temporarily on hold, you're still charged for monthly phone subscription program payments. If you repeatedly pause Google Fi, you violate our Terms of Service.

Upgrade your phone

How upgrade works

After 2 years of monthly payments, you fully own your phone. At that time, you can decide if you want to stay in the program and receive the next device in the subscription program as an upgrade. If you don't upgrade, your monthly payment reduces to device protection only.

If you want to upgrade sooner than 2 years, you must cancel and pay the remainder of your subscription equal to the cancelation payout. After we receive your payment, you can re-subscribe by ordering a new phone. The new device starts another 2-year term.

  1. Go to fi.google.com.
  2. Select the Pixel 6a.
  3. Scroll to “Phone subscription.”
  4. Click Order now.
  5. Customize your Pixel 6a.
  6. Complete checkout.

Find when you’re eligible for your phone upgrade

  1. Open the Google Fi website or Google Fi app .
  2. Select Account.
  3. Under “Devices,” select the subscription phone.
  4. You find “Your phone is eligible for upgrade in {X} months (as of {Y} month).”
