Grade and return question answers

This article is for teachers. If you want to work with quizzes in Google Forms, go to Create a quiz assignment instead.

Before you start grading questions, you can see the status of student work.

You can return grades to one or more students at a time. For ungraded questions, you can give personalized feedback. 

You can download grades for a single question or for all work in a class.

Note: You might notice slight visual differences between tablets and phones.
See work status and student answers
  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the classand thenClassworkand thenthe question.
    On the Student work page, you can see students grouped by work status:
    • Assigned: Work that students have to turn in, including missing or unsubmitted work
    • Turned in: Work that students turned in 
    • Graded: Graded work you returned
    • Returned: Ungraded work you returned
  3. To see a student's answer, tap the student’s name.
  4. (Optional) To add a private comment, tap Add private commentand thenenter your commentand then
    tap Post .
  5. To return to the Student work page, depending on your device, you might have to tap Close .
Enter and return a grade

When you enter a grade, it saves as a draft. You can return one grade at a time, or all grades together during another session. When you return grades, students get a notification and can see their grade. 

  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the classand thenClassworkand thenthe question.
  3. (Optional) To change the question's point value, in the top-right corner, tap the Down arrow and thenenter another value or select Ungradedand thentap Save.
  4. Tap a student’s name.
  5. Tap Add gradeand thenenter a grade. The grade saves as a draft.

    Note: For decimal grades, Classroom supports 2 digits after the decimal point. If you enter more than 2 digits, the grade is rounded to the nearest 2-digit decimal form. For example, if you enter 88.725, it’s rounded to 88.73.

  6. (Optional) To add a private comment, tap Add private commentand thenenter your commentand then
    tap Post .

  7. To return grades, on the Student work page, next to each student whose grade you want to return, tap the boxand thenReturn.
Change a grade
  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the classand thenClassworkand thenthe question.
  3. On the Student work page, tap the name of the student whose grade you want to change.
  4. Tap the grade and enter a new one.
    The grade saves as a draft. You can return it now or later.
  5. (Optional) To return the student's new grade, tap Return and confirm. 
    Note: If you don't see Return, be sure you're on the Student work page and the box next to the student's name is checked.
