Turn notifications on or off

This article is for teachers and students. Guardians, go to About guardian email summaries. 

You can set up Classroom to get notifications, like due-date reminders or invitations to join a class.

By default, you get email notifications for various activities, such as when someone comments on your post or your teacher returns work. You can change these notification settings at any time.

Students and teachers can:

  • Turn all notifications on or off.
  • Choose which notifications you get.
  • Turn notifications for a class on or off.

Turn on or off email notifications

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Next to Send email notifications, choose one:

    • To turn off notifications, tap the switch to off Turn on.

    • To turn on notifications, tap the switch to on Turn off.

Turn on or off device notifications

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Tap Device notifications.

  5. Next to Show notifications, choose one:

    • To turn off notifications, tap the switch to off Turn on.

    • To turn on notifications, tap the switch to on Turn off.

Customize device notifications

You can choose which notifications you receive for all of your classes across devices. For example, you can turn off invitation notifications for all classes but keep assignment notifications on.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Tap Device notifications.
  5. (Optional) Next to Show notifications, tap the switch to on Turn off.
  6. Turn on or off a notification.
    Read the tables below for a description of each notification type.

Teacher notifications

To know when... Turn on:
Someone comments on your post Comments on your posts
Someone mentions you in a post or comment Comments that mention you
A student sends you a private comment Private comments on work
A student submits work after the due date Late submissions of student work
A student resubmits work Resubmissions of student work
A teacher invites you to teach a course as a co-teacher Invitations to co-teach classes
A scheduled post published or failed to post Scheduled post published or failed
 

Student notifications

To know when... Turn on:
Someone comments on your post Comments on your posts
Someone mentions you in a post or comment Comments that mention you
A teacher sends you a private comment Private comments on work
A teacher creates an assignment, question, or announcement Work and other posts from teachers
A teacher grades or returns work Returned work and grades from your teachers
A teacher invites you to a new class Invitations to join classes as a student
You have unsubmitted work that's due within 24 hours Due-date reminders for your work
Turn off notifications for a class

You can choose whether or not to receive notifications for a specific class across devices. For example, if you don’t want any email or mobile notifications for your Math class, you can turn them off, but you’ll still get notifications for your other classes.

Note: If you turn off notifications for a class, all notifications for that class are turned off.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Tap Class notifications.
  5. Next to the class name, tap the switch to off Turn on or on Turn off.
Read notifications

If you have any unread notifications, you’ll see a red circle on the Menu Menu.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.

  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Notifications.

  3. (Optional) To see only unread notifications, tap All and then Unread.
  4. (Optional) To see all notifications, tap Unread and then All.
  5. To delete a notification, swipe it across the screen.
