Create a class

This page is for teachers. Students go here.

As a teacher, one of the first things you'll do in Classroom is create a class for each of the classes you teach. In a class, you can assign work and post announcements to students.

Create a class
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap Add Add and then Create class.

    Click Create class

  3. Enter the class name.
  4. (Optional) Enter a short description, such as grade level or class time.
  5. Tap Create

Next steps: Classroom automatically creates a class code when you create a new class. You use it to invite students to the class. You can archive a class if you no longer need it. For details, see Archive a class.

Accept a provisioned class

The administrator who manages Classroom can create classes for you and add students to them. Classes created by your administrator are in a provisioned state. You need to sign in to Classroom to accept or decline them before they're visible to any students or additional co-teachers.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. On the class card, tap Accept.
  3. Confirm the number of students and activation of the class and tap Accept.

Note: To learn more about provisioning classes, see the Classroom API resources.

Change the class theme
This feature is only available in the computer version of Classroom. Click Computer to see the instructions.
Edit class information
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. On the class card, tap More More and then Edit.
  3. Enter a new name or section, and tap Save.
Display a profile photo
You can display a profile photo next to your name in the class stream and on the class card on the home screen. Classroom uses your Google Account profile photo as your Classroom profile photo. See Change your Gmail profile picture for instructions on changing your profile photo.

Problem creating a class?

If you have a G Suite for Education account and you’re unable to add a class, the Classroom G Suite administrator might need to verify that you’re a teacher. Contact your administrator for help. If you’re the administrator, see how you can set permissions to create a class.

Note: If you have a personal Google Account, there are limits on the number of classes you can create. Learn more about Classroom limits.
