How attachments are shared in Classroom

Classroom works with Google Docs, Google Drive, and Gmail so teachers can assign work to students. Teachers can attach documents, links, and images to their assignments. All activity is online using a computer or mobile device.

Teachers can set when students will see assignments and their attachments. 

Students sign in to Classroom, see their upcoming work, and complete it online. When a student turns in work, the teacher sees it on the Stream page. 

The workflow in action

1. Teacher creates an assignment

The teacher can post to one or more classes, or to individual students in a class, and set a due date. Teachers control access to any files they attach until assigned. 
When attaching a Drive file (document, slides, or sheets), the teacher can choose to:
  • Allow students to view the file—All students can read the file, but not edit it.
  • Allow students to edit the file—All students share the same file and can edit it.
  • Make a copy of the file for each student—Students get an individual copy of the file that they can edit. The student’s name is automatically added to the document title. When a student turns in the assignment, the teacher sees the file labeled with the student’s name.

As students work on an assignment, the teacher can view their progress, add comments, and make edits in the documents.

2. Students turn in their assignments

Students work on the assignment by either viewing a document, editing a shared document, or editing their individual copy of a document. The students can attach files, links, or images to their work. When finished, they turn in their work.
Before the due date, a student can unsubmit work, make changes, and resubmit it. After the student turns in a file from Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, only the teacher has edit access and can make any changes.

3. Teacher grades and returns assignments

The teacher can write notes on student work, add a grade, and return it with individual feedback.

4. Students see their grades, and can edit

The students see their grades. If the students' work includes a Drive file, they regain edit access to the file and can make improvements as required.
