Focus Gemini’s answers on specific files & folders

Ask Gemini to focus only on specific files or folders to get more targeted and relevant answers from your content. This is perfect for finding information within a single document. You can also synthesize details from a specific project folder.

There are several ways to have Gemini focus on specific items:

  • Before you ask:
    • Open the Google Drive app.
    • At the top right, tap Ask Gemini .
    • Tap + Add sources near the prompt box to select multiple files or an entire folder you want Gemini to focus on.
  • After you summarize: When you select one or more files in Drive and choose More actions More and then Summarize, those files are automatically used as the focus for your follow-up questions.
  • In your prompt:
    • Open the Google Drive app.
    • At the top right, tap Ask Gemini .
    • Type @ in the prompt box, followed by the file or folder name.
      • Tip: If you mention a file using @ during an existing chat, it is added to the files Gemini is already analyzing. For example:
        • "From the feedback in @CustomerSurveyResults, what are the most requested features for Product A?"
        • "Condense the critical findings from the @Market_Research_Report_2024 into five bullet points.”

Tips:

  • To remove a specific file or folder you've selected, tap the source chip, then tap the Remove Delete next to its name.
  • To remove all selected items and allow Gemini to search more broadly again, tap the source chip and select Clear all.
  • You can select up to 100 items or 10 folders for Gemini to focus on at one time.

Summarize your files & folders with Gemini

Important: The response Gemini provides might not include every file in your selected folder. You can use Gemini to analyze only one folder at a time.

You can use Gemini in Drive to summarize your folders and files, such as:

  • Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets
  • PDFs
  • Videos
  • Images

The summary helps you understand the main points quickly without the need to review the entire document or large files and folders.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Drive app Google Drive icon.
  2. Next to a file or folder, tap More actions More and then Summarize.
    • Or, open a file preview and at the bottom of the screen, tap Summarize.

Ask questions & retrieve facts with Gemini

You can ask Gemini specific questions about the content within your files and folders to receive direct and relevant answers. This helps you get specific details or facts without the need to open and review the files. For example, you can ask:

  • “What are the three main types of cyber attacks discussed in the provided documents?”
  • “Use folder @Data restructuring, what is the difference between structured and unstructured data?”

To ask questions:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Drive app Google Drive icon.
  2. At the top right, tap Ask Gemini .
  3. Select a suggestion or type your own question.
    • To limit the scope of your question, enter “@” followed by the file or folder name. For example:
      • "From the feedback in @CustomerSurveyResults, what are the most requested features for Product A?"
      • "Condense the critical findings from the @Market_Research_Report_2024 into five bullet points.”

Tips:

  • To remove all selected resources, tap Clear selected sources .
  • To remove a specific selected resource, tap Clear source Delete.
  • To provide feedback on an answer, tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .

Manage summary cards

Feature availability:

When you open a PDF or a video with a transcript in Drive, a summary card may appear to give you a quick overview of the file.

To turn off summary cards:

  1. Open a PDF or video file.
  2. On the summary card or in the file toolbar at the top, tap More .
  3. Tap Turn off automatic summaries.

To turn summary cards back on:

  1. Open a PDF.
  2. In the file toolbar at the top, tap More .
  3. Tap Turn on automatic summaries.

Get the sources of Gemini’s answers

To generate an answer, Gemini uses relevant sources, which may include the open file, files in your Drive, and info from the web.

To check where the information came from:

  • Hover over an inline citation number to view the source of a specific citation.
  • Select Sources at the bottom of the response to view all files used.
