Email Notification to Non-Gmail account for Changes

Hello everyone,

I am sharing a google doc with a number of people. I want to get a notification on my phone when someone changes the Google Doc. The mail application on my phone is synced to a non-gmail email account and I dont want to change that. Notifications for google doc changes have been enabled but those notifications are sent to my gmail account.

When google Docs sends my gmail a notification, can I have gmail send a notification to another email account (Whatsapp or other application) so that I can receive notifications for google doc changes on my phone?

Google Doc > Gmail Notification > Other Email Notification > iPhone

^ Is this possible?

Thank you everyone!

Hi, there, and welcome to the Google Docs Help Forum. I don't believe that's possible. Notifications are only sent to the email address associated with your Google account. It might be possible to do this by sharing the document with your alternate address as long as it's not affiliated with your Google account (such as by being a backup address). I've tested this with my own email addresses, however, and was unable to make it work, but theoretically it should.

Best,
Jo

You can put a filter on your Gmail account so that messages from Google Docs (or whatever the sender address is) get automatically forwarded to your non-gmail email address.

That's an excellent point, Lyn. Thanks for mentioning that. Of course, that's something you'd have to do within Gmail, not Docs, but it should indeed work.

Thanks a lot for this, its really encouraging to know its possible. However, I've done some investigation and it appears to be somewhat complicated. I know that by going to the forwarding section in gmail, I can have ALL my incoming mail forwarded to another address, and then it seems that I need to go to filters and add a filter that will prevent all mail from being forwarded except for the mail from the specific address I want to forward the notifications to. But once in the filters pop-up window, I dont see a field for filtering by email address.... Its a bit complicated for me, can you help with some more specific instructions?

Since this forum is specifically for Google Docs, I suggest that you post your question in the Gmail Help Forum. Someone there should be able to guide you through the process. Good luck!

Best,
Jo
