Collection is lost when I uncheck its parent collection

I have a collection called A which I was shared with my collaborators.
The collection has sub collections such as A1, A2, A3.
When I clicked Organize on A1 and unchecked its parent collection A, it is totally lost with its all contained document.
I'm sure it is a bug. Please help to restore my lost collections.

Hi jargalanch,

Please try the following:

  • Sign out of Google Docs, refresh the page, and sign back in.
  • Click the arrow next to the search bar and then click 'Collections.'  Is the A collection or any of its sub collections there?
  • Click on 'All items' located to the left of your documents list.  Go to 'Sort' and  select 'Title.'  What do you see?
  • Are your collaborators able to see the A collection in their documents list?  What about any of the sub collections?
I'll follow up once I see your reply.

I assume that OP is seeing behavior that is well-documented on the forum even as it is badly documented in the GDocs help pages. In a reply under [1] I describe the situation for a collection shared with all the world, but it works just as easily for individual shares. In the post [2] it is the L0/doc0 case, and the L0/doc1 case in the same posting shows how confusing it can get. Sharing is a total mess in any case as is documented better under [3]-[5]. The key concept that one must try to understand is that of hidden variables as the root of the mess. To anyone seriously interested in sharing situations in the GDocs file system I would also point to [6] and [7] even though the situation described there (ability to delete through innocent actions files and collections that one did not own and could not see) was mercifully resolved 10 weeks after the situation was created.

[2] Remove a file from a collection and the file disappears completely

[3] Problems with missing files and collections owned by me

[4] Hidden file structures and surprising side-effects

[5] Many problems with sharing

[6] Trashing a collection now deletes the content too

[7] Possibility to delete files that one does not own
