Highlighting text in new google docs

I can no longer "highlight" text. I saw a discussion (with no solutions) about "selecting" text problems.  I can select the text and can do other things like change the font color, but can no longer "highlight" text....the button is not even on the toolbar anymore and not in the drop down menus.

I'm using Windows 7 and IE9.  I've had no problems previous to this week and I use this function frequently.  Is it a glitch in the new version or has the option been taken away for some reason?

Well, never mind.  When I posted my question I found the answer in a suggested post.  Google decided to "hide" the highlight took within the "text color" tool.  How silly.

It's really annoying since you can't just apply the last selected text color or highlight color with just one click; you need two clicks as the first will open up the colorpicker/text or highlight dialog and then you need one or two more clicks to choose whether you want to color the text or background, and a further click to select even your last selected color.

In all a really annoying and uncalled for change, Google Docs should really bring back one-click last applied color for both text and background as two separate splitbuttons.

THANK YOU, Amy!  I spent several minutes looking for the answer to this, AFTER I had spent several minutes trying to find it buried in Google Docs tools!  Google, when you don't follow industry standards, you confuse your users.

yeah, got to agree, this is ergoomically retrograde...I wonder what's up with making it harder to highlight?

The new switch is troubling! I really want a quick way to just hit yellow highlights for key passages. Has anyone found a faster new workaround?

Many of the add-ons have a sidebar like this, so that's not unusual. It's just how they integrate with Docs. As the add-ons are created by third-party developers, there's no way for Google to improve on them. However, you can send your suggestions to the Docs team directly for how to improve the highlight feature offered within the Docs app itself. Here's how:

How to Submit Feedback or Feature Suggestions for Google Docs
1. Open a Google Docs document.
2. Go to Help > Docs help.
3. Click on Send feedback (at the bottom).
4. Type in your feedback suggestions.
5. Press the blue Send button.

The more requests they receive to improve the highlight feature, the more likely it is we'll see the enhancements in future updates.

Best,
Jo
