Add footnotes, page numbers, headers & footers

You can insert headers and footers to add dates, titles, or author names to all of the pages in a document. You can also add page numbers and page count.

Note: These features are not available on Google Sheets or Slides. You can freeze a row or column to make it a header in Sheets, or add numbers to a slide in Google Slides.

Footnotes

Add or insert footnotes
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click where you want to insert a footnote.
  3. Click Insert > Footnote.
  4. Type the footnote.
  5. When you're finished, click back into the body of your document.
Delete footnotes
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Select the footnote number.
  3. On the keyboard, press delete. The footnote will be erased.
Copy footnotes
  • When you make a copy of a document, the footnotes copy with it.
  • If you copy and paste text that contains a footnote, use the web clipboard to be sure the footnote is included.

Headers and footers

Add a header or footer
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click Insert, then choose:
    • Header: A box will appear at the top of each page.
    • Footer: A box will appear at the bottom of each page.
  3. Type the text you want in your header or footer.
  4. To finish the header or footer, click on the main document.

You can also add a header or footer by double-clicking the top or bottom of the document.

Delete a header or footer
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Double-click the header or footer you want to remove.
  3. Delete the text from the header or footer. The header or footer will be removed from the entire document.
Change the first page header or footer

Note: You cannot add different headers and footers to every page.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click Insert > Header or Footer.
  3. On the first page, click Different first page header/footer. The first page header or footer will not affect the rest of the pages.

Add page numbers

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click Insert > Page number.
  3. Choose where you want the page numbers:
    • Top of page Top of page
    • Bottom of page Bottom of page
    • Top of page (except title page) Top of page minus title
    • Bottom of page (except title page) Bottom of page minus title
  4. The page numbers will be added automatically.

Delete page numbers

To delete a page number, click the header or footer of the document and delete the page numbers.

Add page count
  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click Insert > Page count.
  3. If you've inserted page numbers, the page count will show at the top or bottom of the page, next to the page number.
  4. If you haven't inserted page numbers, the page count will be added wherever your cursor is placed in the document.
