Ad rules and VMAP

VMAP (Digital Video Multiple Ad Playlist) is an IAB standard for multi-ad playlists. By implementing VMAP for your network, you're supporting a standardized specification for ad rules across third-party players or content partners that manage ads playing on your pages. The Google IMA SDK handles DFP VMAP along with VMAP requests coming from third-party ad servers. Using VMAP means rules and ad pods no longer depend on custom XML calls, which are not always supported across players and partners.

VMAP responds with VAST 3 ad calls, taking advantage of the newest VAST standards, including granular error codes. For this reason we recommend switching to VAST 3 along with VMAP.

Specifically, VMAP simplifies the following use cases:

  • If you're a DFP publisher that has first right for a video program’s ad inventory, VMAP means you can control this inventory more easily across multiple partner sites.

  • If you're a DFP publisher using ad rules to structure your video ad inventory and ad breaks during long-form video content, including the number and placement of ad breaks, the VMAP standard means you can seamlessly communicate with other partners via a standard for ad break structures.

  • If you're a distributor, IMA SDK VMAP support means you can accept VMAP responses from third-party content partners.

Implement VMAP

  1. Sign in to DoubleClick for Publishers.
  2. Click Admin and then Video settings, and select VMAP as the default VMAP version.
  3. Click SAVE.
