Set up your Chromebook

To set up your Chromebook, follow these steps.

What you need

To set up your Chromebook, you'll need:

  • Your Google Account username and password
  • Access to a Wi-Fi network. Some Chromebooks also support Ethernet.
If you have a Chromebox

You'll also need:

  • External monitor
  • USB mouse and keyboard. Some Chromeboxes also support Bluetooth devices.

Set up your Chromebook

1. Turn it on

  • If the battery is detached, insert it per your manufacturer's instructions.
  • Press the power button.
If you have a Chromebox
  • Plug in your USB mouse and keyboard, or set up your Bluetooth devices (if your Chromebox supports Bluetooth).
  • Connect to an external monitor.

If the display doesn't appear, try pressing Ctrl + Full screen (F4) to cycle through the display options.

2. Follow the on-screen instructions

  • Choose your language, keyboard input method (optional), and network.
  • Accept the terms of service.
  • Enroll your Chromebook (if you're using your Chromebook at work or school).
  • Sign in with your Google Account. This account will be set as the owner.

If you don't have a Google Account to add, create one. On some Chromebooks, you can click More options > Create new account. To use your Chromebook without an account, click Browse as Guest.

3. Choose your profile picture

You can take a photo with the built-in webcam (on Chromebooks) or choose an icon. Don't worry, you can always update your picture later.

4. You're done!

You're now on the web and signed in to the Google services you use. Your bookmarks, extensions, apps, and other browser settings from Chrome will appear automatically.
