Add or remove someone in a direct message

To add someone to a direct message (DM) with two or more people in Google Chat, add them to the member list or mention them in the message.

Add people to a DM

  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Open a DM.
  3. At the top, click the conversation name and then Start a new chat.
  4. Enter a name or email address.
  5. Click Create.

Tips:

  • To quickly add a new person to a DM with two or more people, in the reply area, enter @ followed by the person's name.
  • Or, next to the conversation name, click the drop-down and then Add people.

Remove people from a DM

Important: When you remove someone from a DM, they can't:

  • Participate in the conversation.
  • Check message history.
  1. On your computer, open Google Chat or Gmail.
    • In Gmail: On the left, click Chat.
  2. Open a DM.
  3. At the top, next to the conversation name, click the drop-down and then View members.
  4. Next to the person’s name, click More options and then Remove from conversation.
