  1. In the book’s settings, go to the “Content” tab.
  2. Click Upload a file.

Each file should be less than 2 GB.

Filename guidelines

Use the guidelines below to name your files.

Tip: These guidelines are specific to files uploaded on a specific book's "Content" tab. To upload files directly from the Book Catalog, refer to the filename guidelines for bulk uploads.

.epub files

.epub filename extension. For example, book.epub.

.pdf files .pdf filename extension. For example, book.pdf.
  • Books split across multiple PDF files should include the current and total number of files before the filename extension in this format: <current>of<total>. For example, 1234567890_1of2.pdf and 1234567890_2of2.pdf. You can replace 1234567890 with text of your choice.
  • If the PDF file doesn't include the cover and the cover will be submitted in a separate file, the PDF filename must include interior in the filename before the filename extension. For example, 1234567890_interior.pdf.
Front cover image files

.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .tif, .tiff, or .pdf filename extension. For example, cover.jpeg.

Cover files in PDF format should include frontcover in the filename before the filename extension. For example, 1234567890_frontcover.pdf.

Back cover image files

.png, .jpg, .jpeg, .pdf, .tif, or .tiff filename extension.

Filenames must include backcover before the filename extension. For example, 1234567890_backcover.tif. You can replace 1234567890 with text of your choice.

For all files, don't include an underscore character ( _ ) in the filename unless it's used before one of the above mentioned suffixes. For example, _1of2 or _backcover.

Upload & update files

You can upload one or more files for a single book or for multiple books in the Partner Center.

To update a file, upload the new version, which replaces the old version.

One file for a single book

To upload a file for a single book:

  1. In the book’s settings, go to the “Content” tab.
  2. Upload the new file.

To update content or cover images, upload a new .pdf or .epub file to the existing book listing.

Multiple files for a single book

To upload multiple files for a single book:

  1. In the book’s settings, go to the “Content” tab.
  2. Make sure that your files follow the naming requirements.
  3. Upload and submit all the files at the same time.
    • If you don't submit all the required files at the same time, the files are listed under "Pending Content" on the book's Content tab. The content or cover doesn't process until you submit all the expected files. For example, ISBN_frontcover.pdf stays listed under "Pending Content" until you upload ISBN_interior.pdf.

When you update a book with multiple files:

  • For multi-part .pdfs, like ISBN_1of2.pdf and ISBN_2of2.pdf: Resubmit all the files, even if not all of them are getting updated.
  • For a .pdf file without the cover, like ISBN_interior.pdf and ISBN_frontcover.jpg: Resubmit the content (ISBN_interior.pdf) to trigger the process for the most recent set of files. Alternatively, if you update the cover image with a .pdf file and don't change any other files, name the file as ISBN_frontcoveronly.pdf.

Multiple files for multiple books

To upload multiple files for multiple books:

  1. Go to the Book Catalog.
  2. Select Advanced and then Add multiple content files.

Each updated filename must have either:

  • The same filename as its original file, or
  • The identifier as a prefix

If you use a filename that doesn't meet these requirements, you get a new book listing in your Book Catalog.

Tips:

File status & history

Files you submit for this book appear in the upload history on this page, under "Pending content."

If they process successfully, they'll replace any older versions of the same display type in our system and move to the "Processed Content" list. Any errors will be noted in the "Issues" column.

The version listed under "Processed Content" will be available on Google Books and Google Play, if sales are enabled. Previous versions will be listed under "Past Files."

Files may appear in your upload history under a different filename than the one you used.

Pending Content Files are listed here if they haven't been successfully processed yet. This content includes files currently undergoing processing and files with errors. Check the "Issues" column for the details.
Processed Content The most recent successfully processed version of each display type is listed here. The version that will be available on Google Books and on Google Play, depending on your settings.
Cover Files Processed cover image files are listed here.
Past Files Previous versions of your book files are listed here, which includes versions that didn't successfully process and old cover image files.

Display types

  • Flowing: .epub files
  • Fixed: .pdf files
  • Cover: Cover image files are displayed in a separate list, under "Cover Files."
