How to change Google Assistant's default spelling for commonly used proper names?

Some first names (often used when using GA to transcribe a message - voice to text) are spelled in various ways despite be pronounced exactly the same. (Sofia/Sophia Ann/Anne Bobbie/Bobby Don/Dawn Sean/Shawn etc) When I use the microphone for hands-free texting to someone, I hate that Google Assistant ALWAYS picks the same wrong spelling - Sophia - despite fact I have no one named Sophia in my address book. I've added Sofia to the custom Android dictionary, but no luck. This is an issue with GA hearing a word and only allowing one spelling of it. Can we upvote favorite spellings or delete words we commonly use to address this?

Hey all,

Found a solution to this problem.

For this example, let's say the contact is named "Shawn" and Assistant keeps thinking you are saying "Shaun"

1) Go into your Google contacts app
2) Open the contact "Shawn"
3) Tap to edit the contact "Shawn"
4) Scroll to the bottom of the edit contact options and tap "more fields"
5) Scroll back to the top of the edit contact options and you will now see new options:

- Phonetic last name
- Phonetic middle name
- Phonetic first name

6) Enter the spelling "Shaun" for Phonetic first name
7) Save your edit
8) Go back to Assistant and say "send a message to Shawn" like you normally would. You should now see "Shawn" display as a contact option to send a message when Assistant still incorrectly thinks you mean "Shaun" (and still displays it on the screen as such).

---

Definitely not a very intuitive way to handle. The Google support rep I spoke with had no answers. I had to do some digging in contacts and eventually discovered.

Hopefully the Assistant team implements an easier way to recognize spellings/pronunciations of people's names. Or... you know... could just recognize similarly spelled names or remember I talk to someone named "Shawn" 30 times more than this mysterious "Shaun" fellow.

Teach Assistant how to pronounce a name
Important: This feature is only available in English and in the US on Android devices version 12.16.1 or later.
Once you've taught Google Assistant how to pronounce a name, your Assistant will pronounce the name on your Android devices, speakers, and Smart Displays.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Tap You  Your people  Contact name.
  3. Under "Name pronunciation," tap Record your own  Record .
    • Tip: If you try to record a pronunciation and it doesn't work, to teach your Assistant how to pronounce the name, tap Spell out how it sounds & record. Record the pronunciation again after you confirm how to spell the name out.
  4. To have your Assistant repeat the pronunciation back, tap Play.
  5. If you like the pronunciation, tap Save.

Google Assistant USED TO spell my husband's name correctly, but no longer does. When I say "ok Google, call Erik" the text on my screen now reads "call Eric," and GA says "who do you want you call?" (I have no other Eriks or Erics in my contacts.) I reply "Erik" and THEN GA understands I mean Erik. This used to work on the first try, now not so much.

Yep my name is Cory and it always spells my name Corey....super frustrating and if I counted the times I have to change it...wonder how many years I have lost

Just tried this and still does not work any different. When I try to text Kerry, his name still comes up as Carrie with VOICE TO TEXT.

Google....this is obviously an issue with so many replies. Think of all the people that haven't taken the time to dig and try to find a resolution.

Please let me train Google Voice for PROPER NAMES. This is 2021 and even John isn't just John anymore.

I'm also experiencing this issue with Kathy/Cathy, Eric/Erik, etc.  I see the tip about entering phoenetic alternatives in 'Google Contacts', but for me, I seem to be using a native (Samsung? Android? Verizon?) 'contacts' app on my Samsung S10 android phone, not 'google contacts'.  When I launch the 'contacts' app, I can't see any ownership (no vendor name). If I say, 'ok google - launch contacts', it launches to a website 'contacts.google.com', and only a handful of contacts are there. I've synched my phone with my outlook address book and I have hundreds of contacts in there.

Google, you are at the forefront of technology but I cannot change the default spelling of my wife's name and constantly have to correct it. Google assistant know who I am talking about when I say Dani but your keyboard is incapable of spelling anything other than Danny. Please fix this!!!

I really hate Google keyboard because of this. I use SwiftKey now because of this, but I still have to use voice keyboard. I cringe every time I think that I can't correct somebody's name. It takes me more time to go back to correct somebody's name a hundred times then it does for me to actually type it on the dumb keyboard. Seriously Google. Seriously. This issue has been around forever, this and the "Oh,". What the heck, man? This is a really really simple fix. Why do you guys stumble over the simple stuff!? It's so frustrating!

In addition to Google voice typing repeatedly misspelling my kids names several times a day, now my screen won't shut off if I've left the microphone icon up after talking to my phone. I have come back to my phone up to an hour later and the screen is still lit up.

Come on, Google! Listen to your customers.

This is not a very good solution. It only works in this limited context. My girlfriend's name is Brianna. Her name is spelled with an e. I am using Google Voice recognition to type this comment, and as you can see, there is only 1 spelling of that name that comes up. And to this day, no matter how many times I correct Google voice to text spell her name properly, is still spelled wrongly, Brianna.

I don't see the "Name pronunciation" option.  I'm running a stock Pixel 3XL.

Name pronunciation is not on option for contacts, only for >yourself< via settings/basic/nickname/pronunciation.

I'm using voice text to reply to this. My daughter's name is Aaron but it is spelled a a r o n while I talk. Her name is obviously e r i n. If I touch the word Aaron to where it becomes underlined, suggestions are shown below. But none of the suggestions are e r i n, or even a way to manually type in the suggestion. This is what I want Google to fix.
