If your Assistant doesn’t respond on your device, follow these steps to help fix the issue. Learn how to start a conversation with your Assistant without saying “Hey Google.”

Before you start

Make sure your mobile device is connected to the internet with a strong signal. If you have connection problems, restart your device.

Step 1: Check for Google app updates

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, in the Google Play Store, go to the Google app page.
  2. Tap Update. If the page says "Installed," you already have the latest version.

Step 2: Check if Hey Google is turned on

  1. On most Assistant-enabled devices, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Under "Popular settings," tap Voice Match.
  3. Turn on Hey Google and set up Voice Match.

Tip: If you're signed in to a Google Workspace for Education account on your device and can't turn on "Hey Google," the admin might have turned off settings that are needed for "Hey Google" to work. Please contact your admin for more details.
If your device doesn't have the Google Assistant app
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app Google app.
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu  Settings and then Voice and then Voice Match.

Step 3: Check your Assistant's language

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, say "Hey Google, open Assistant settings."
  2. Under "All settings," tap Languages.
  3. If you need to change your Assistant’s language:
    1. Tap your current language.
    2. Choose a new language to use with your Assistant.

Step 4: Turn off Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Settings app Android Settings.
  2. Tap Battery:
    • Battery Saver: Tap Battery Saver and then Turn off now.
    • Adaptive Battery: Tap Adaptive Battery and then Turn off Adaptive Battery.

Step 5: Say "Hey Google"

To find if you fixed the issue, say "Hey Google." To make sure the Google Assistant picks up your voice:

  1. If you’re in a loud area, turn off background noise or go somewhere quieter.
  2. Say "Hey Google" like you would in normal conversation.
