Set up Google Assistant on your device

You can find info and get things done with the help of your Google Assistant. Ask it questions and tell it to do things.

Languages you can use

On Android devices, the Google Assistant is available in Arabic, Bengali, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, and Vietnamese. More languages are coming soon. 

What you need

To use the Google Assistant, you’ll need a device with:

  • Android 5.0+ with at least 1.0GB of available memory or
  • Android 6.0+ with at least 1.5GB of available memory
  • Google app 6.13 or higher
  • Google Play services
  • 720p or higher screen resolution
  • Device's language set to a language listed above
Check if your device has what it needs

Check your Android version

Check your Google app version 

  1. On your device, open the Google app Google Search.
  2. On the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and thenSettings and then About.
  3. Look for the version number at the top.
  4. If your version is below 6.13, go to the Google app page, then tap Update

Check if you have Google Play services

  1. On your device, go to the Google Play services page.
  2. Tap Install. If you find  "Uninstall" or "Deactivate," you already have Google Play services.

Start a conversation

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google." If the Google Assistant is off, you'll be asked to turn it on.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.

Tip: On devices running Android 8.0 and up, you can also talk to the Google Assistant when your device is locked by saying "Hey Google." Learn how to control what information displays on your lock screen.

Other ways to reach your Assistant

  1. On your device, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Tap Keyboard Type.
  3. Enter a question or command and then Send Send Arrow
Open the Google Assistant app

First, get the Google Assistant app.

  1. On your device, open the Google Assistant app Assistant (iOS) .
  2. Ask a question or say a command.
Squeeze your phone (Pixel 2, 3, 3a & 4)
  1. Squeeze the bottom half of your phone.
  2. Ask a question or say a command.
