Set up the Google Assistant on your TV

You can ask questions and get things done with the help of your Google Assistant on a TV.

Android TV

Languages you can use

On Android TV, the Google Assistant is available in English. More languages are coming soon.

What you need

  • Android TV with the Google Assistant built in
  • TV with HDMI ports
  • HDMI cable
  • Google Account
  • Wi-Fi connection

Get started

Step 1: Check for a system update

  1. At the bottom of your Android TV’s Home screen, go to Settings and then About.
  2. Select System upgrade and then Check for upgrade and then Check now.
    • If your system system needs an update, select Download.
    • If you don’t need an update, you’ll see "Your system is up to date."

Step 2: Set up your Google Assistant

  1. On your remote, press the microphone.
  2. An introduction to your Google Assistant should appear. Follow the steps in that introduction.

Step 3: Talk with your Google Assistant

  1. On your remote, press the microphone.
  2. Say a command or ask a question. See examples of what you can ask.

On Nvidia Shield TVs, you can also talk with your Assistant by saying "Ok Google" to your game controller. Learn how to set up "Ok Google" on your controller.

Other TVs

If a TV can work with your Google Assistant, its packaging will say so. For example, some 2018 and newer LG TVs work with Assistant.

  • TV with the Google Assistant built in
  • Google app Google Search
  • Google Account
  • Android phone or tablet that:
    • Is running Android 5.0 or higher 
    • Works with a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (a WPA2-Enterprise network won’t work)
  • Internet connection and secure wireless network

Get started

  1. Connect your TV (with the Google Assistant built in) to the same Wi-Fi network as your Android device.
  2. Make sure you have the latest Android version. Learn how to check and update your Android version.
  3. Check and update your Android apps. Learn how to update your Android apps.
  4. Get the latest version of the Google app Google Search:
    1. Go to the Google app page and tap Install or Update (whichever appears).
    2. If you see “Installed,” you already have the latest version.
  5. On your Android device, start setup in one of these ways:
    • Open your Google app Google Search. Say, "Set up my Assistant device."
    • Open your web browser, like Chrome or Firefox. Go to g.co/assistant/setup.
  6. Follow the steps on your Android device, like finding your TV on your Wi-Fi network and connecting your Google Account.
