Use Google Assistant on your TV

You can ask questions and complete tasks on your TV.

Set up your Android TV

What you’ll need

  • An Android TV with Assistant
  • A TV with HDMI ports
  • An HDMI cable
  • A Google Account
  • A Wi-Fi connection

Step 1: Check for an update

On your Android TV, use your remote to scroll to the bottom of the Home screen.

  1. Choose Settings Settingsand then About.
  2. Select System upgrade and then Check for upgrade and then Check now.
    • If your system needs an update, select Download.
    • If you don’t need an update, you’ll see, "Your system is up to date."

Step 2: Set up your Assistant

  1. On your Android TV’s remote, press the Microphone button.
  2. On your TV screen, an introduction will appear. Follow the steps to get started.
    • To speak to your Assistant on a Nvidia Shield TV, say "Ok Google," to your game controller. Find out how to set up "Ok Google" on your controller.

Step 3: Talk to your Assistant

  • On your Android TV’s remote, press the Microphone button.
  • Give a command or ask a question. Get ideas about what you can ask.

You can find out about other features when you change your Assistant settings.

Set up Other Assistant-enabled TVs

If a TV can work with Assistant, its packaging will say so.

For example, some 2018 and newer LG TVs work with Assistant.


What you’ll need

  • A TV with Assistant built in.
  • The Google app Google app
  • A Google Account
  • An Android phone or tablet that:
    • Runs Android 5.0 and up
    • Works with a 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi network
  • An internet connection and secure wireless network

Start your set up

  1. Connect your TV to the same Wi-Fi network as your Android device.
  2. Install recent updates on your Android device. Find out how to check for the latest Android version.
  3. Update the apps on your Android device. Learn how to get the latest version of your apps.
  4. Get the most recent version of the Google app Google app:
    • On your Android device, go to the Google app page and tap Install or Update.
    • If you see "Installed," you already have the latest version.
  5. To start the setup, on your Android device, open your Google app Google app and say, "Set up my Assistant device."
    Note: You can also visit from a web browser like Chrome or Firefox.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions.

Languages you can use

On Android TVs, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), and Spanish. More languages are coming soon.

On TVs that don't run the Android TV operating system, available languages vary. On LG TVs, the Google Assistant is available in English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. On all other TVs, the Google Assistant is only available in English.
