Issue resolved.
(See my 143 144 and 146.)

Received the following suggestions from the Android Team.  Number 3 was key.

"Thanks for contacting the Android Auto support team. Please try the troubleshooting steps below.
  1. Go through the generic troubleshooting guides at My Android Auto app isn't working and Can’t connect or stay connected - How to diagnose/address the issue.
  2. We recommend using a high quality 3.0 USB cable or above as they tend to have better performance overall.
  3. Please check the USB ports for both phone and head unit for lint or debris and clean them out.
  4. Try factory resetting the head unit of the car. You can find this information on your car owner’s manual.
  5. Restart the phone device."
A little compressed air did the trick.  A clue should have been the USB not connecting when backing up and restoring (something I'd tried along the way).  Interesting that phone was charging okay, but not communicating.

Hope it works for you.
Kudos to the Android Team and I'll pass it on to Honda.
Helpful?

Paul,

I have figured out how to generate the bug report and have done so. I can't however figure out how to attach and send the bug report to you. What am I missing ?

My solution was to get a more heavy duty cable.  It’s worked every time since then, months ago.

Guys, I fixed this issue at least for Redmi note 6 pro. I enabled the USB Tethering option which fixed my issue and connected to Android Auto.

I have just successfully my Oukitel K6 7.1.1 to a Vauxhall Mokka.
It refused to connect initially. Using the info from here, the steps I used to resolve this were as follows.
  1. I uninstalled and reinstalled Android Auto (probably could have just wiped the data)
  2. Connected to the car with USB
  3. Went into phone settings/more/Tethering & portable hotspot - and enabled USB Tethering
  4. Even though this was disabled again it made Android Auto start up
  5. In Android (top left hamburger) auto settings/connected cars - the setting Add New cars was off - I turned it on
  6. The program then went through the setup and worked consistently.
  7. Subsequent connections do not need the above procedure
The K6 needs a USB C cable which sticks out a long way as the socket is quite recessed. I found that some of my cables were very intermittent with Android Auto even though they are reliable when charging. My phone is 2 years old and I think the data connections are getting worn. However with a good cable it is reliable.

Hey all I know there's been many replies to this thread. I had these issue off and on until I finally did one thing. I reopened behind the head unit to evaluate my connections via USB. I knew my connection was a 3.0 USB however there was another connection in the back that I installed which came with the head unit. This connection was only 2.0. I removed extra USB connection/extension and plug directly into the back of my device/head unit. I have a total of 7 hours run time without any issues. I'm fairly certain that the connection issue will generalize across phones and operating systems. Please double check your USB connections all the way from the head unit to your phone.

Problem "solved"

I have confirmed that on my
     Galaxy Note 8 (Android V9, Kernel 4.4.153.16529926)
After backing out Android Auto to version 4.6.593324

I can reproduce the problem across a series of Mercedes (GLA, E350, GLC) and that the "solution" is to stop the phone from sleeping.

so, first thing:
1. Go  to settings,  in to search field enter: put unused apps to sleep. Switch it off. (Why this would affect WAZE, which I use every day is a mystery.)

2. Activate developer mode ( open the Settings screen, scroll down to the bottom, and tap About phone or About tablet. Scroll down to the bottom of the About screen and find the Build number. Tap the Build number field seven times to enable Developer Options), open developer options, scroll down to "STAY AWAKE" (this option allows the phone to stay awake when on a charger), and enable the option. The downside is that when you plug in your phone, you need to remember to turn off the screen (click the right-hand button) or it will take longer to change.

When I have "STAY AWAKE" turned on, everything is good, when I turn it off, the display stutters, tries to find it's location, catches up, works for a couple minutes, then freezes.....rinse and repeat.

I do also have another problem and that's that WAZE eventually give you the "light blue screen of death", a condition in which it appears to be running, but you cannot see the map, just a gradient blue fade. The only way I know to clear this is to reboot the phone.

I just bought a new Kenwood DMX706S and it works for about 5 minutes on my Pixel 2 XL. After that the phone goes bonkers and becomes useless until i unplug the USB cable.

I noticed that USB options changes to "No Data Transfer" automatically and I can't keep it connected, i change it and the phone changes it right back.

Grazie.
