Using upgraded URLs
You might be familiar with a Destination URL – it's the web address that people click on to get to your landing page. If you use tracking, then you also use the Destination URL field for tracking parameters and redirects to third-party tracking services. This upgrade replaces the Destination URL field with a Final URL field, and creates a new field for tracking management. If you don’t use tracking, then you won’t need to change a thing.
For the last few months, the “Destination URL” field that you’re used to seeing has been part of a larger “Landing page” field, where you've been able to choose to define a Final URL or a Destination URL.
Now, the "Final URL" field is your only landing page option (Destination URL is retiring). The Final URL is simply the web address of your landing page, where people go when they click on your ad.
What you need to do:
Nothing. Since you don’t use tracking in your Destination URLs, we will upgrade your URLs for you automatically in the coming months.
Note for people who advertise with Gmail ads:
- In preparation for the automatic upgrade, all Gmail Single Promotion template ads will use a single URL from the end of August 2016. That means that the call-to-action button URL will be copied to the landing page URL. If your call-to-action button URL is different from your landing page URL, a copy of the ad will be created and activated. After a few days, the old ad will be removed.
- Ads that are paused at the time of upgrade will also be upgraded and remain paused.
- Custom HTML ads will continue to use Destination URLs.
Suppose that your Display URL is www.google.co.uk.

To prevent ad disapproval, make sure that the domain names of your Display URL and Final URL match.
Now that Destination URLs can no longer be used, these changes will take effect:
- Destination URLs will automatically be moved to the new “Final URL” field for any ad groups in your account that don’t contain cross-domain redirect URLs. We’ll send you an alert in your AdWords account to let you know if any of your ad groups weren't upgraded.
- Destination URLs can no longer be edited or created. If you’re using AdWords Editor, you can’t post changes to ads still using Destination URLs. If you use tracking, please contact us if you need to edit your URLs. We’ll guide you through the upgrade.
- Any ads with Destination URLs that have not been updated to Upgraded URLs will stop serving in a few months. We’ll let you know at least 30 days before your ads stop serving by email and with an alert in your account.
