Policy FAQs for mobile optimised (multi-screen) websites

When building your multi-screen website, it's important to ensure that your site complies with the AdSense programme policies. To help you get to know our multi-screen policies even better, we've put together these frequently asked questions from AdSense publishers.

What's the Google AdSense mobile ad placement policy?
Do the standard AdSense for content (AFC) policies apply if I'm using AFC on my smartphone or tablet?
Yes. AdSense policies apply to all AFC units, regardless of the device.
Is there a policy difference in the number of AFC ads I can show on a site viewed on a desktop compared to a site viewed on high-end devices?
No, there is no difference in the total number of ads that you can show on a site viewed on a desktop vs. high-end mobile device. However, as per our valuable inventory policy, you may not place more ads than content on your page.
Can I use my own custom solution to dynamically choose the AdSense ad unit size which appears on certain screen sizes instead of the AdSense responsive ad code?
It depends. Please review our programme policies to find out which ad code modifications are permitted, paying careful attention to our article on AdSense's responsive ad code.

AdSense's responsive ad code is designed to automatically adapt the ad unit size to your page layout. If you find that our responsive ad code doesn't do everything you need, you may modify the ad code to specify either a general shape (horizontal, vertical and/or rectangle) that your ad unit should conform to, or an exact size for your ad unit via CSS. To use the advanced features of the responsive ad code, it says that I need to make changes to my ad code. Isn't it against AdSense policy to modify my ad code?
No, not in this case. Modifying your responsive ad code to specify either a general shape (horizontal, vertical and/or rectangle) that your ad unit should conform to or an exact size for your ad unit via CSS, is considered to be an acceptable modification of the AdSense ad code.
Note that we don't recommend using the advanced features unless you're confident about modifying your ad code.
Can I use responsive ads on my non-responsive website?
Yes, our responsive ad units also work on non-responsive websites. However, for the best user experience, we recommend that you also adapt your website to be multi-screen friendly. Learn more about going multi-screen in our Multi-Screen Starter Guide.
I have implemented two ads side-by-side on my responsive desktop site. Is it possible to hide one of those ads for mobile-optimised sites?
Yes, we do allow publishers to hide responsive ad units for particular mobile screen sizes to improve the user experience. However, please make sure that you follow our instructions to hide your ad unit to ensure proper implementation and prevent calling unnecessary hidden ad requests. Note that improper implementation may result in lower performance and violates our policies.
Will using display:none to hide my responsive ad unit result in unnecessary ad requests?
No. As long as you follow the instructions provided to hide your ad unit, then no unnecessary ad requests will be made when ads aren't shown.
What's the best practice for placing multiple ads in one page on a mobile-optimised website?
