Understanding ad unit serving type (Beta)

Note: This feature is currently in beta release.

Ad unit serving type is important to understand if you use a third-party mediation platform in addition to or instead of AdMob.

This article explains how ad units can be used in the AdMob platform or in third-party mediation platforms.

In AdMob

When you create an ad unit for use on the AdMob platform (i.e. in an AdMob mediation group or campaign), you’ll create a standard ad unit. To date, these are your existing ad units and just called “ad units.” With the introduction of partner bidding, you may see these referred to as “standard ad units.”

In third-party mediation platforms

There are two types of ad units you can use to access Google demand in supported third-party mediation platforms (not AdMob):

  • Standard ad units are used for traditional waterfall mediation.
  • Partner bidding ad units are used for real-time bidding auctions.

Standard vs. Partner bidding ad units

The following table describes the different types of ad units and their use cases.

Use case Standard ad units Partner bidding ad units
In AdMob (for example, you create mediation waterfalls in your AdMob account or you only use AdMob to fill your ad requests)

Standard ad units can be used for waterfall mediation or bidding in an AdMob mediation group (includes demand from AdMob Network and third-party sources). You can also use these ad units in AdMob without using mediation, which means that only the AdMob Network fills your ad requests.

Note: If you have existing ad units in AdMob, you may see them referred to as "ad units" rather than "standard ad units."

n/a

You cannot use partner bidding if you’re using AdMob mediation or filling ad requests with the AdMob Network only.

In third-party mediation platforms (for example, you create mediation waterfalls outside of AdMob using another mediation platform)

Standard ad units are created in AdMob to be used for waterfall meditation on a third-party mediation platform.

In this case, standard ad units include AdMob Network demand only.

Partner bidding ad units are created in AdMob to be used for bidding in supported third-party platforms.

These ad units enable Google demand to compete for your inventory in a real-time bidding auction.

Note: You must use partner bidding ad units in order to access Google demand through real-time bidding on third-party mediation platforms. Ads will not serve if you use a standard ad unit for Google bidding.

View ad units by serving type

On the ad unit page, you can filter the ad units by their serving type (standard or partner bidding). Select the ad unit serving type you’d like to filter on in the dropdown menu.

  1. Sign in to your AdMob account at https://apps.admob.com.
  2. Click Apps in the sidebar.
  3.  Select the name of the app associated with the ad unit you want to remove. Note: If you can't find it in the list of recent apps, click View all apps. Then, click the name of the app.
  4. Click Ad units in the sidebar.
  5. Click the Ad unit serving type dropdown to filter for either Standard or Partner bidding ad units.
