Set up line items for Adaptive Banners

Adaptive Banners dynamically select and serve the best banner size for each user that views the ad. Adaptive Banners can accommodate both reserved and backfill inventory. To ensure the right serving behavior for each, some additional configuration is recommended in the Ad Manager UI (below) as well as in the Google Mobile Ads SDK (Android | iOS).

Add line items for backfill inventory

To set up backfill inventory for anchored Adaptive Banners, it’s recommended that each ad unit serving an anchored Adaptive Banner ad has at least two line items targeting that ad unit. Each line item should have only one creative size specified as follows.

Line item sizes for Anchored Adaptive Banners

For Adaptive Banners in an anchored position (locked to the top or bottom of the device screen):

  1. The first line item should have a single creative size: 320x50
  2. The second line item should also only have one creative size: 641x50

Line item sizes for Inline Adaptive Banners (closed beta)

For Adaptive Banners in scrollable content:

  1. The first line item should have a single creative size: 320x50
  2. The second line item should also only have one creative size: 641x50

Why is this necessary?

In Google Ad Manager, creatives for backfill inventory must match one or more line items. Depending on whether a banner is placed anchored or in a scroll view, having just these two sizes will match the widest range of high-performing ad sizes available. Having both of these line items maximizes the chances for a creative to fill an anchored Adaptive Banner placement on any user device.

It’s not recommended to add multiple sizes that have similar values within a line item for backfill inventory, as this may lead to significantly lower performance. Following the guidance above should lead to maximum performance. Be sure to also follow all instructions in the developer documentation (Android | iOS) for the GMA SDK.

Serve reservations in anchored Adaptive Banners

To serve reservations in anchored Adaptive Banners, it’s important to ensure these two steps are followed:

  1. Line items with creative sizes matching the reservations you want to serve are targeting the ad unit used for your anchored Adaptive Banner.
  2. In your app code for the ad unit in question, the ad size parameter includes the full list of sizes matching all of the reservations you want to serve in that placement.

Why is this necessary?

For a reservation ad to be shown, the size of that reservation line item must match the size conveyed in the ad request.

Configure Adaptive Banners and yield groups

For Adaptive Banners to work with yield groups in mediation:

  1. You must specify a size for the mediation yield group. To ensure maximum performance, 320x50 is strongly recommended.
  2. In your app code, use the publisherAdView.setAdSizes() method to add the size 320x50 as an entry in the AdSizes array.

Open Bidding

For Open Bidding, a yield group isn’t required. If you do use a yield group, you don’t need to specify a size.
