Create a test domain with Google Workspace for Education

If you have a Google Workspace for Education account and want to test new features in a separate domain, apply for a test domain.

If you don’t have a Google Workspace for Education account, you need to sign up for Google Workspace for Education first.
For instructions, go to Get started for K–12 or higher institutions or Get started for homeschools.

Step 1: Create a test account

  1. Go to the Google Workspace for Education signup form.
  2. Complete the details about your educational institution.
  3. When you get to Does your institution have a domain?, click Yes, I have one I can use.
  4. Enter the subdomain of your existing Google Workspace for Education primary domain.

So our approval team can identify your new subdomain as a test domain, it must have this format: gworkspacetest.domain.com.

Example Google Workspace for Education domain New test subdomain
    bestschool.com gworkspacetest.bestschool.com
  5. Click Next.
  6. Create a user account.
You’ll use this account to sign in to your Google Workspace for Education account on the test domain.
  7. Review the Terms of Service and click Accept and sign up.
You'll receive an email with information about your new account.

Step 2: Verify that you own your domain

You need to verify the test domain that you created. Verification ensures that no one else uses your domain for Google services without your permission or sends email that appears to come from your school.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

Use your Google Workspace for Education account to sign in.

  2. Verify that you own your domain. For details, see Verify your domain for Google Workspace.

You get a 14-day free trial with your Google Workspace for Education test account. For details, go to About your Google Workspace free trial.

After you submit your request and verify your domain, we review your organization’s eligibility. We contact you by email about the status of your application in 1–2 weeks.
