Turn Early Access apps on or off for users

Early Access apps are services and products developed by Google teams. Early Access apps make a Google service or product available to your Google Workspace users. Periodically, Google adds to or removes services from the Early Access apps setting, and this page is updated for the current, supported Early Access apps.

Early Access apps

The Early Access apps setting currently controls these apps in Google Workspace:

• Google AI Studio and Google APIs: An experiment by Google that lets people in your organization prototype with generative language models. Refer to Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI APIs Additional Terms of Service.
• NotebookLM: An experiment by Google that lets people in your organization interact with source content using language models. Refer to Google Terms of Service and the Generative AI Additional Terms of Service.

Control who can use Early Access apps

As an administrator, you can control who uses Early Access apps:

• Early Access apps are turned off by default for all editions.
• The setting lets you turn all Early Access apps on or off. You can’t turn on or off individual apps independently.
• Google Workspace for Education editions: Users under the age of 18 are restricted from using Early Access apps with their Google Workspace for Education accounts. This is true even when the Early Access Apps setting is on. For details, go to Control access to Google services by age.
• Early Access apps access to core services is also off by default.

Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.

1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

   Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

2. In the Admin console, go to Menu  AppsAdditional Google services.

   

3. In the list of all services, scroll to and click Early Access Apps. The Settings for Early Access Apps page opens.
4. On the Settings for Early Access Apps page, click Service status.

5. To turn a service on or off for everyone in your organization, click On for everyone or Off for everyone, and then click Save.

6. (Optional) To turn a service on or off for an organizational unit:

   1. At the left, select the organizational unit.
   2. To change the Service status, select On or Off.
   3. Choose one:
      • If the Service status is set to Inherited and you want to keep the updated setting, even if the parent setting changes, click Override.
      • If the Service status is set to Overridden, either click Inherit to revert to the same setting as its parent, or click Save to keep the new setting, even if the parent setting changes.

7. To turn on a service for a set of users across or within organizational units, select an access group. For details, go to Use groups to customize service access.

Manage Early Access apps access to core services

When Early access apps are turned on, they have the minimum access to Google Workspace data required to function. This access may not be enough to support all features in the apps.

To allow Early Access apps to access core services in Google Workspace (so they can take actions such as exporting to Gmail and saving to Google Drive), you can turn on Core Data Access Permissions for all or some users in your organization.

Before you begin: If needed, learn how to apply the setting to a department or group.

1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

   Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

2. In the Admin console, go to Menu  AppsAdditional Google services.
3. In the list of all services, scroll to and click Early Access Apps. The Settings for Early Access Apps page opens.
4. On the Settings for Early Access Apps page, click Core Data Access Permissions.
5. (Optional) To apply the setting only to some users, at the side, select an organizational unit (often used for departments) or configuration group (advanced). Show me how

6. Click Allow users at your organization to access Google Workspace and Customer Data using Early Access apps.
7. Click Save. Or, you might click Override for an organizational unit.

   To later restore the inherited value, click Inherit (or Unset for a group).

When an Early Access App gets its own on or off control

Google will announce when an Early Access app is scheduled for shutdown or evolves to become a Google service. If an Early Access app becomes a Google service:

• The service is no longer controlled by the Early Access apps setting.
• The service becomes an Additional Google service with its own setting.
• Initially, the service's settings are the same as its Early Access apps setting. For example, if the Early Access app is turned on for specific organizational units and allowed to access core services data, any new Additional Google service will have the same settings.

• Starting June 6, 2024, when an Early Access app becomes an Additional Google service, your Google Workspace account Release preferences setting for new products determines whether the Additional service is automatically enabled or disabled by default.
