Use YouTube Music on other apps & devices

YouTube Music  integrates with several apps and services so you can enjoy a great listening experience, whether you’re at home or on the go. To learn how to use YouTube Music with some other services, read below.

These options are available to listeners of YouTube Music with ads, and YouTube Music Premium members.

Note: YouTube Music with ads is available in South Korea only when streaming on Google Home and screenless Nest devices.

Smartwatches

You can listen to YouTube Music with your Wear OS watch. Enjoy music and podcasts anywhere using your watch, without needing to carry a mobile device with you. You can stream music over LTE or Wi-Fi, or you can download songs and podcasts to your watch so you can listen to music while offline. Leave your phone behind, and workout to your favorite songs with YouTube music on your wrist. 

Tip: YouTube Music is supported on most watches running the latest version of Wear OS 2, or newer. All playback from YouTube Music should be 128 kbps bitrate AAC.

Here’s what you can do with YouTube Music on Wear OS:

  • Listen to music and podcasts using your watch connected to a Bluetooth accessory, like headphones.
  • Download music and podcasts directly to your watch so you can listen without an internet connection.
  • Stream music and podcasts directly from your watch so you can listen without a paired device nearby.
  • Control playback, manage your downloads, and songs, from your wrist.

Download the YouTube Music app

To get started, download the YouTube Music app to your Wear OS watch:

  1. Open the Google Play Store on your watch.
  2. Search for YouTube Music.
  3. Select the YouTube Music app to start downloading it to your device.
  4. Once the app is installed, sign in to your YouTube Music account to start listening to music. 

From there, you can browse your library, workout suggestions, find your downloads, and personalized music recommendations.

Download music

To listen to YouTube Music without an internet connection, download music and podcasts directly to your Wear OS device:

  1. Open YouTube Music on your Wear OS watch.
  2. Tap the song, playlist, or podcast that you want to download.
Tap the download icon .

Tip: Turn on smart downloads to keep your watch automatically up-to-date with your favorite music. When you turn on smart downloads, your watch will automatically download music for you based on your YouTube Music listening history.

Tip: Keep in mind the amount of music you can download depends on the storage space you have available on your Wear OS device.

Stream Music

To listen to YouTube Music without a paired device nearby, make sure your watch is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular connection.

Important: To use a cellular connection, you need an LTE plan from your provider. Cellular streaming is not supported on iOS. 

  1. On your Wear OS watch, open YouTube Music.
  2. Tap the song or playlist you want to listen to.
  3. The song will stream and play over the available connection.
Tip: To stream and play music over a cellular connection, you need available data. To save data, connect to Wi-Fi when possible.

Tip: The Playlist Detail Page shows content within a playlist or album. You can see the title of the playlist, a view of songs within the playlist, and additional details like the name of the artist/creator or when the playlist was last updated.

Use the YouTube Music Tile

To access your most recently played playlist or to quickly navigate to the browse page of the YouTube Music app, add the YouTube Music tile. Learn how to manage tiles on your device here

Google Home & Nest speakers

You can use YouTube Music on smart speakers, such as Google Home and Nest speakers.

Smart speakers will stream music for you that is closely related to the album, song, or playlist that you request. They cannot play specific requests or repeat songs, unless it is music you have uploaded. However, you can change radio stations to listen to different music and skip to the next song up to 6 times per hour.

If you use YouTube Music with ads, and you request a song that you uploaded to YouTube Music, you will be able to play that specific track.

Note: YouTube Music Premium members can listen ad-free on smart speakers, and request albums, songs, and playlists on-demand. Check out our paid membership options to explore other membership benefits and sign-up.

In some markets, YouTube Music will be your default music streaming services on Google Home devices. If it’s not your default, you can change your music service settings.

Smart displays

Smart displays that have built-in Google Assistant can be used with YouTube Music. These include Google Nest and Lenovo Smart Clock. Just ask your Google Assistant to play a song, artist, or playlist using YouTube Music.
Smart TVs
For all Smart TVs and streaming devices that support the most updated version of the YouTube app on TV: 
  1. Download the YouTube app and sign in to your account.
  2. Using your remote or controller, click to the left, which will open a menu on the left side of your screen.
  3. Select Music from the menu - here you will find your personalized YouTube Music content.
You will see only your personalized YouTube Music content if you’re signed in to YouTube.
For one-click access to YouTube Music on your Android TV, you can also:
  1. Select the Google Play Store app.
  2. Select Search and type in “YouTube Music.”
  3. Select Install.
  4. Click the YouTube Music launcher icon. You will be taken directly to the YouTube Music tab of the YouTube app - sign in to find your personalized YouTube Music content.

Casting from the YouTube Music app to your TV
Now, you can use your YouTube Music mobile app to control the search, browse, or playback experience on the full YouTube app. While connected, your YouTube Music mobile app will function as a remote for YouTube on TV.
Note: With this update, content not normally available in YouTube Music may show up on the YouTube Music player page and queue, depending on what’s playing and what’s in your queue. When you disconnect, content not available in YouTube Music will be removed from your queue.
To cast YouTube Music from the app to your TV:
  1. Make sure your phone, tablet, or computer with a supported cast browser is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your casting device.
  2. Open the YouTube Music app.
  3. Tap Cast  (near your profile picture).
  4. Tap the device you want to cast to.
  5. When you play a song or video, your content will start playing on the TV connected to that device.
To stop casting content, tap Cast and then This Phone.

Device files

YouTube Music supports browsing and playback of music that you have saved on your Android device - even if the YouTube Music streaming experience isn’t offered in your country or you're listening offline.
To listen to your device files using YouTube Music:
  1. In the YouTube Music app, tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Tap Library & downloads.
  4. Toggle “Show device files” to the on position.
  5. Your device files will now appear in your Library. Navigate back to your Library .
  6. Find the music you want to listen to within the Playlists, Albums, Artists or Songs options of your Library. Then tap the Device files tab at the top of the page. Tap to play the device file you want to hear.
Your device files can be played on their own, or as part of playlists that only contain other device files. Device files can’t be added into playlists that contain streaming songs from YouTube Music. They also can’t be cast to another device.

Google Pixel Buds

You can listen to YouTube Music with your Google Pixel Buds - and use Google Assistant to control your experience. Learn simple gestures that allow you to take actions like play, pause, or control your volume when listening to YouTube Music with your Google Pixel Buds.
If Google Assistant is set up and you’re on an Android phone, you also use Google Assistant to play music for you.

YouTube Music Premium Members

If you're a YouTube Music Premium Member, you can enjoy your music with additional apps and services. Check them out below.

Android Auto

To access YouTube Music with Android Auto:
  1. Make sure you're signed into the YouTube Music app.
  2. After signing in, go the music tab in Android Auto.
  3. YouTube Music should now be in the music tab for your listening experience.
If you see an error message when attempting to use YouTube Music on Android Auto, make sure you're signed into your YouTube Music app. Then try re-accessing YouTube Music on Android Auto.
Note: You can listen to podcasts on Android Auto regardless of your membership status.

Apple CarPlay

To use YouTube Music with Apple CarPlay, make sure that you're located in a country/region where YouTube Music Premium is available. Then, follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to the YouTube Music app.
  2. Open the YouTube Music app on your CarPlay screen.
  3. Use the navigation bar at the top of your screen to explore your music, or find music in the Recommended, Library, and Downloads tabs.

If you see an error message when attempting to use YouTube Music with Apple CarPlay, make sure you're signed into your YouTube Music app.

Note: You can listen to podcasts on Apple CarPlay regardless of your membership status.

Fitbit

Enjoy music and podcasts on-the-go using your Fitbit. Work out to your favorite songs with YouTube Music on your wrist.

YouTube Music is supported on the Charge 6.

With YouTube Music on Fitbit, you can:

  • Connect your Fitbit with YouTube Music to control music and podcast playback.
  • Browse and select playlists from your Fitbit.
  • Find recommended music based on your current activity or workout.
Note: To control your music experience on your Fitbit, make sure that your phone is within the required bluetooth range.

Install YouTube Music on your Fitbit

  1. On your Fitbit, open Fitbit settings and then YouTube Music.
  2. Tap Setup.
  3. Add the YouTube Music app to your Fitbit from the Fitbit app gallery.
    1. Note: If you don’t have the YouTube Music app installed on your phone, this will block setup.
  4. To complete setup, accept or decline music recommendations during exercise.

Listen to music on your Fitbit

Before you begin, open your Fitbit app on your phone. Then, follow the steps below from your Fitbit.

  1. On your Fitbit, swipe to the YouTube Music controls app and tap to open it.
  2. Swipe down to browse available music and podcasts.
  3. Tap a selection to play or pause.
    • Swipe left to skip a track, restart a song, or go back to the previous selection.
    • Swipe left again to adjust volume.
Garmin smartwatches
Enjoy music and podcasts on-the-go using your Garmin smartwatch. Download music and podcasts to your smartwatch, then leave your phone behind and workout to your favorite songs and episodes with YouTube Music on your wrist.

With YouTube Music on Garmin smartwatches, you can:

  • Download and control playback of music playlists and podcast episodes
  • Browse your Library or downloaded music and podcasts
  • Remove downloaded music playlists and podcast episodes
  • Control playback, adjust volume, skip forward/backward, and shuffle or repeat music
Note: Streaming isn’t available with Garmin smartwatches. Download playlists and podcast episodes before using your smartwatch.

Setup requirements

Before you begin, make sure that:

  • All notifications are enabled for the Garmin Connect app on your phone
  • Your Garmin watch is connected to the phone using Bluetooth
  • The Garmin Connect app is open on your phone during set up

Sign in to your YouTube Music account

  1. From the Garmin Connect IQ Mobile app on your smartwatch, download the YouTube Music app.
  2. Open the YouTube Music app on your Garmin smartwatch.
  3. When prompted, open the Garmin Connect app on your phone to sign in to YouTube Music.
  4. From the notification screen on your phone, tap Sign in.
  5. Enter the code displayed on your Garmin smartwatch.
  6. Enter your YouTube Music username and password and tap Sign in.
  7. Select the account you’d like to sync with your Garmin smartwatch.
  8. Read and agree to the Garmin Connect IQ Terms & Conditions.
If you don’t receive a code, check out the setup requirements above to make sure notifications are enabled and try again. If you still don’t receive Connect IQ notification, open Google device connect from your phone’s browser and enter the code from your Garmin watch.

Download music and podcasts to your Garmin smartwatch

To use YouTube Music with your Garmin smartwatch, follow the steps below to download playlists and podcast episodes onto your device.

  1. Open the YouTube Music app on your Garmin smartwatch.
  2. Select Browse music, Browse podcasts, or Library.
  3. Select from your Library, Music, or Podcasts to find playlists or podcasts to download.
  4. Click on a playlist or podcast to begin the download.
  5. Allow your smartwatch to sync changes.

Some songs may not show up on playlists due to unstable internet connection or unsupported content or audio formats. To improve your download experience,

  • Connect to Wi-Fi before you begin a download
  • Make sure that your internet connection is stable
  • Place the watch near your Wi-Fi source, without obstructions
  • Connect to a power source during download

Listen to downloaded playlists and podcast episodes

You can listen to music playlists or podcast episodes that you have downloaded onto your Garmin smartwatch. Before you begin, connect headphones to your smartwatch using bluetooth. To start listening,

  1. Tap YouTube Music to browse playlists and podcasts downloaded from your Library.
  2. Tap on a playlist or podcast episode to begin listening.
You can only play music from the Browse screen. After you download a music or podcast, make sure to click Back from the YouTube Music download screen. Then, select music or podcasts to play.

Sonos Wireless Speakers

To set up YouTube Music on your Sonos app:

  1. Open the Sonos app.
  2. Tap More from the menu on the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Add Music Services.
  4. Select YouTube Music and then Add to Sonos.
  5. Tap I'm already a member.
  6. Tap Authorize and paste the code presented on the previous screen.
  7. Tap Next and sign in to or select your YouTube Music account.
  8. Return to the Sonos app.
  9. Enter an account and then click Done.

If you have trouble connecting, you may need to update your app and then try these steps again.

Android Clock

To use YouTube Music with Android Clock:
  1. Open your Clock app on your Android device.
  2. Add a new alarm or select an existing alarm.
  3. Click the bell , where you’ll be taken to your alarm sound page.
  4. Click on YouTube Music.
  5. Choose a suggested song or click on Search  to search for a new song.

You can also use Android Clock to listen to music while you fall asleep. To set up a sleep timer, follow these steps:

  1. Open your Clock app on your Android device.
  2. Tap Bedtime.
  3. Follow the instructions on screen to set a regular wake-up alarm and tap Next. To skip this step, tap Skip.
  4. Follow the steps on screen to set a bedtime and silence your device. Then tap Done.
  5. On the Bedtime page, scroll to “Sleep sounds” and tap Choose another sound.
  6. Select YouTube Music.
  7. Choose from the suggested music or click Search  to search for a song, artist, album, or playlist.

Casting to audio-only devices

Any devices with Chromecast built-in will support casting from the YouTube Music app. This includes casting to TVs, video streamers, speakers, and audio streamers. Read more about which TVs support Chromecast and which speakers support Chromecast to get started.

Tesla automobiles

To use YouTube Music with Tesla, make sure that you're located in a country/region where YouTube Music Premium is available.
With YouTube Music on Tesla, you can:
  • Listen to music and podcasts on-demand
  • Browse your Library and saved music
  • Find suggested content and personalized playlists
Note: Some YouTube Music features, like downloading and video playback, are not available on your Tesla automobile.

 Listen to YouTube Music from your Tesla

  1. Open the YouTube Music app from the App Launcher at the bottom of your Tesla screen.
  2. Sign in to the YouTube Music app using the QR code or one-time code on your Tesla screen.
  3. Use the tabs at the top of your screen to search for music or explore your YouTube Music Library.

Troubleshooting tips

  • Some songs may not show up on playlists due to unstable internet connection or unsupported content or audio formats.
  • If you see an error message when attempting to use YouTube Music with your Tesla, make sure you're signed into your YouTube Music app. 
  • To improve your download experience, make sure that you’re connected to Tesla Premium Connectivity.

Waze app

To use YouTube Music with Waze, make sure you have both apps downloaded on your mobile device. Then follow the instructions here to turn on the audio controls and select YouTube Music.

Google Maps

You can set YouTube Music as your default music service and then use it to play music without minimizing Google Maps navigation. Make sure you have the YouTube Music app on your phone and then follow these steps to play music while navigating.
Once you've set up YouTube Music with Google Maps, the YouTube Music icon will appear on your navigation screen. You can click on the YouTube Music icon to pull up the YouTube Music widget and use it to play, skip or pause music, choose from a set of playlists, or click on it to open the YouTube Music app.
