An update to our policies on nudity and sexual content
In order to more consistently apply our Community Guidelines, we’re updating today our policies on Nudity and Sexual Content for both live action and animated content. As with the rest of our policies, these updates apply to all types of content on our platform, including videos, links, comments, Community posts and images. Our goal is to better protect users while we ensure YouTube continues to be a place for artistic expression and educational content.
What’s changing
Where we are being more permissive:
- Sex and nudity in Fictional/Scripted Content: With this policy update, more content from TV shows, movies, and other fictional settings will be allowed on the platform as long as it has the proper context and doesn’t cross the line of sexually gratifying content. For example, we may no longer age-gate a non-graphic sex scene from dramatized or fictional content as long as there’s no nudity, and we may not age restrict the appearance of a sex toy in scripted content as long as it isn’t being depicted in a sexually explicit way.
- Sex and nudity in Educational Content: We will allow content that is intended for educational purposes as long as it is not sexually gratifying. So, we wouldn’t allow content that shows someone using a sex toy, however we may not age restrict content where sex toys are seen in the video for the purposes of safe sex tutorials or product reviews. This content might cross the line into being policy violative if the the sex toy is being used.
Where we are being more restrictive:
- Sexual sounds in ASMR content. We’ve strengthened our policies to better identify and action ASMR content that is sexually gratifying. ASMR videos with audio sexual sounds may be age-restricted or removed from the platform.
- Sexually explicit images: As a part of this policy update, we will fully enforce on images such as thumbnails, avatars, banners & posts that show sexually explicit content. Specifically, we will fully enforce on images containing nudity, unwanted sexualization, and sex acts.
- Use of Sex Toys: We will continue to not allow videos of sex toys when they’re in use.
As usual, note that links that send users to websites featuring pornography or other violative content are not allowed on YouTube. Don’t direct viewers - through links or verbally - to a website with content that violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines.
We want to give the community time to adjust to these changes, so Creators won’t receive a strike for content removed for violating this policy if it was uploaded before this policy update on September 7.
As always, let us know if you have any questions!
