If you lose your internet connection while using the YouTube app on an iPhone or iPad, you'll get an error message in the video player. You may also get an error message in the Home, Trending, Subscriptions, or You tabs.
To resume using the app
- Make sure you're connected to the internet.
- If you're not connected to Wi-Fi:
- Go into the Settings app on your device.
- Check that Cellular Data is turned on for YouTube.
- Restart your network connection by turning it off and then on again.
- In the YouTube app, pull down to reload the screen.
- Restart the app if needed.
Watch offline with YouTube Premium
If you're signed in to your YouTube Premium account on mobile you can watch videos that you've previously downloaded. You'll find these videos in the You tab. Some actions, like commenting and liking, are only available when your device is online.
Download videos to watch offline in select countries
In select locations, certain videos on the YouTube mobile app are available to download for offline playback. These videos can be watched during periods of low or no connectivity. You'll find these videos in the You tab.
You must be signed in to use the Download feature. Some features, like commenting and liking, are only available when your device is online.
Downloaded videos can be played offline for up to 48 hours. After that, you'll need to reconnect your device to a mobile or Wi-Fi network every 48 hours to allow the app to check for changes to the video or its availability.
