Apply content ratings

On September 19, 2017, you will no longer be able to create paid content on YouTube. All your existing paid channels or videos will continue to show until December 1, 2017, and then they'll be made private. Individual videos purchased (not rented) will be accessible to purchasers until December 1, 2022 per purchase terms. Learn more about your options for managing paid content.

Content ratings enable customers and prospective customers to assess how family-friendly the videos on your channel are. Some countries require that you rate all paid content, and it's good practice to rate all of your content. If you don't provide a content rating for a paid video, YouTube treats it as age-restricted content by default.

You rate the content of your videos by applying a YouTube content rating, which identifies any mature content in six categories: Strong language, Nudity, Sexual situations, Violence/disturbing, Drug use, and Flashing lights. For TV and movie content, you may also have received ratings from one or more official ratings organizations.

Only you can assign ratings to your videos, and you can only assign ratings to the videos you have uploaded. You can only apply content ratings to paid videos or videos on paid channels: you must save an offer for a video or channel before you can apply content ratings.

To apply a content rating to a video:

  1. Sign in to YouTube.

  2. Navigate to the Video Manager.

  3. Click the Edit button next to the video you want to apply a content rating to.

  4. Click the Content rating tab.

  5. To apply a YouTube content rating, click Specify rating, then choose the appropriate option in each of the six ratings categories.

  6. To apply a rating from an official ratings organization, click the box that corresponds to the rating that the video received.

Hover over a box to see a short description of the rating. Repeat this step for each ratings organization from which you have received a rating.

  7. Click Save changes.

You have the option to apply the same YouTube content rating to multiple videos at the same time:

  1. On the Video Manager page, select the check box next to the videos you want to apply the rating to.

  2. Click Actions > Advanced, then choose YouTube content rating from the list of available actions.

  3. Click Specify rating, then choose the appropriate option in each of the six ratings categories.

  4. Click Submit to apply the rating to the selected videos.
