Create and manage clips

You can clip a small portion of a video or live stream and share it with others on social channels or via direct communications, like email or text. Clips are public and can be watched by anyone with access to the clip who can also watch the original video. You can find clips that you've made and clips made from your videos on the 'Your clips' library page. Video creators can manage clips made from their videos in YouTube Studio.

Note: Clipping videos is turned on by default. Learn how to turn it off.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

I don't see how to create clips on YouTube.

To make clips from a video or live stream on YouTube, you must:

  • Be signed in.
  • Create a clip from an eligible and opted-in channel. A channel may also turn off clip creation on their content.

Clips can't be made from:

  • Videos shorter than two minutes
  • Videos that are Made for Kids
  • Live streams without DVR
  • Live streams over eight hours long
  • Premieres while they're still live
  • Videos made from news channels

Who can see the clips that I've created?

Clips are public and can be watched and shared by anyone with access to the clip who can also watch the original video. Creators who own the original video have access to all clips made from that video on their Library page and in YouTube Studio, and can watch and share clips of that video. Clips can also be seen on selected search, discovery and analytics surfaces available to viewers and creators on YouTube.

Why are the clips that I've created no longer available?

If the original video has been deleted or set to private, then clips of that video will be unavailable. If the video has been set to unlisted, then clips of that video will still be available.

If the original video violates our Community Guidelines, then clips created from that video will be removed.

I created a clip from a live stream that's not working.

Clips will show up after the live stream has finished and has been uploaded as a video. You can't create clips from live streams without DVR or live streams longer than the DVR time frame. Learn how to turn on DVR on live streams.

If a live stream lasts longer than the DVR time frame, any clips that fall outside the DVR time frame will not be playable until the live stream ends and the original video has been posted.

Can I create Shorts from clips?

Yes, you can remix a clip if the clip's source video is also eligible for remix. All remix tools available to you on a video are also available to you on any clip of that video – learn more here.

Creators who own the clip's source video can convert the entire clip into a Short – learn more here.

How can I view my clip's performance?

You can view the number of clips made from your video, the number of views for each clip, who made it, and other information in the Clips  section on YouTube Studio.
