About 20 hours ago, I started receiving the following error message in Discover from both the home screen and the Google app on my Pixel 2: "It looks like there was an error signing in to your account"

This error does not appear elsewhere in the Google app, or in any other Google app.

In order to resolve the issue, I've tried:

  • Clearing the cache and storage for the Google app
  • Disabling/re-enabling the Google app
  • Uninstalling/Reinstalling Google News
  • Clearing the cache for Google Play Services
  • Restarting the phone

In investigating the issue, I found this long-standing support forum post, but more interestingly, this reddit post from around the same time I noticed the issue with several other folks reporting the same problem. I've been a web developer for over a decade, and this smells a lot like a widespread server-side issue.

Thanks for the help!

Go to settings, then Apps, click on the Google app, top right hand corner is Uninstall Updates. That worked for me immediately. It didn't mess with my search data at all, it just rolled back some updates that seem to be doing more harm than good
