How to turn off voice read back out loud when using Google to search w/in Chrome? (G Asst is off) 1 Recommended Answer 13 Replies 155 Upvotes
When dictating into a Google search bar within Chrome, the first results are read back out loud. Trying to manage this (turn off) within the Google app has been unsuccessful. Google Assistant is off. Changing the voice inside of G app does not change the voice in Chrome (so no connection between the two?). Google Fi employee says only option is to turn off the dictation keyboard feature. No way! Or, to disable and delete Google app in system settings. Which also disables the dictation feature.
Since apps are constantly updated, search results about Google Assistant and the Google app are immediately and always out of date and wrong (about where to and how to find the menu buttons, etc.).

SOLVED- On your phone go to Google.com. Change it to from mobile to desktop version. Settings in the top right corner>Search Settings>Spoken Answers>Just show text.
Then switch back into mobile version. The setting seems to stay. recommended this

A few months ago i found how to turn this off but today it spoke again and can't relocate how to disable again.

For those saying this doesn't work, I believe I've found your point of confusion. When starting from a fresh Chrome tab on your phone and after tapping the 3 dots in the upper right side of chrome and clicking Desktop site, Chrome does not automatically reload the desktop version of that fresh new Chrome tab. You have to refresh the page...I actually just tapped the main google logo which then refreshed the page in proper desktop mode. From there, just tap the Settings link below the main search bar (you know it...the bar with "All", "News", "Images", "Videos", etc.). "Settings" is second on the far right of that bar next to "Tools". When you click "Settings", you'll get a dropdown menu where you'll see "Search Settings" at the top. Click "Search Settings" and you'll see the "Spoken answers" section which you can change to "Just show text". Hope this helps.
