Learn how Google’s featured snippets work

Google's search results sometimes show listings where the snippet that describes a page comes before the page link, unlike the standard format. Results displayed this way are called "featured snippets." Featured snippets are one way that Google helps people more easily discover the information they're seeking.

You can find featured snippets:

We display featured snippets when our systems determine that users are seeking answers to questions that can be fulfilled by specific passages found on relevant webpages.

These are helpful for those on mobile or who search by voice.

Featured snippets commonly contain one listing, but more than one may appear.

How featured snippets are chosen

Featured snippets come from web search listings. Google's automated systems select featured snippets based on how well they answer the specific search request and how helpful they are to the user. Your feedback helps us improve our search algorithms and the quality of your search results.

Tip: If you’re a website owner, learn how to manage featured snippets in Google Search.

Why featured snippets are removed

Featured snippets are removed if they don’t follow our policies.

We rely on reports from our users, and to avoid issues in the future, your reports help us improve our search algorithms.

We manually remove any reported featured snippets if we find that they don't follow our policies. A website may not be eligible for featured snippets if our review finds that it has other featured snippets that don't follow our policies or violate our Google Search Essentials.

How to report a featured snippet

If you have an issue with a featured snippet, below the featured snippet, click Feedback. You can report a featured snippet if you think it:

  • Doesn’t follow our policies
  • Has inaccurate or misleading information
  • Gives an answer that you don’t like
Tip: You can also provide positive feedback if the featured snippet is helpful to you. This also helps us improve our automated systems.
Our policies for featured snippets

To ensure featured snippets are a helpful experience for everyone, we have systems that prevents the display of snippets that violates the content policies for Google Search or these policies for Search features:

  • Dangerous content
  • Deceptive practices
  • Harassing content
  • Hateful content
  • Manipulated media
  • Medical content
  • Sexually explicit content
  • Terrorist content
  • Violence and gore
  • Vulgar language and profanity

Featured snippets also have an additional feature-specific policy that's applicable:

  • Contradicting consensus on public interest topics: Featured snippets about public interest content shouldn't contradict well-established or expert consensus support. These include issues such as:
    • Civic
    • Medical
    • Scientific
    • Historical
We may remove information presented as facts that lack supporting evidence if it accuses individuals or groups of serious malevolent acts.

Tip: These policies only apply to what appears as a featured snippet. These do not apply to web search listings nor cause those to be removed.
