Improve contact & voice recognition

If you turn the 'Contact recognition' setting on, whenever you say the name of a contact, Google learns more about how you pronounce words.

Turn contact recognition on or off

To share your contact information with Google, you'll need to turn on the 'Contact recognition' setting. Certain voice actions, like asking Google to call or text someone, won’t work when this setting is off.

  1. Open the Google app Google .
  2. In the bottom right corner, touch the Menu icon More Menu > Settings > Accounts & privacy.
  3. Check or uncheck the box for “Contact recognition.”

Note: If you see the "Contact recognition" setting, you aren't on the newest version of the Google app. To get the latest version, visit the Google app page in the Play Store and touch Update.

What information is collected

When the Contact recognition setting is on, your device's contacts will be to sent to Google.
