Google app location settings

Use the instructions below to manage location settings used by the Google app, including Location History and setting your home and work addresses.

Location History & Location Reporting

Android

Location History allows the Google app to show you useful information based on where you’ve been with the devices that you’re signed in to. For example, the Google app uses your past locations to do things like show you traffic updates for your daily commute by learning the route you take to work.

Turn Location History on or off
  1. Open the Google Settings app .
  2. Touch Location > Google Location History.
  3. Turn Location History on or off for your account or devices:
    • Google Account: Move the top switch to turn Location History on or off for all devices associated with your Google Account.
    • Device only: Move the switch next to a listed device to turn Location History on or off just for that device.

Note: When you turn off Location History, you stop saving new information about where you've been. To remove past locations, you need to delete your Location History. However, when you delete your Location History, some Google Now features won't work.

When you turn on Location History, Google only saves this information for devices that are signed in to your Google Account and have Location History for that device turned on.

Send your location to Google (Location Reporting)

Location Reporting helps Google Now show you cards related to traffic alerts, directions, and more.

When Location Reporting is on, Google will periodically use and store information about where your device is throughout the day. Turning Location Reporting off for your iPhone or iPad only turns it off for that device.

  5. Touch Done.

Note: Other apps by Google may have their own Location Reporting settings. Turning Location Reporting off for Google Now does not affect the settings in those other apps. If another Google app is reporting your location using their own form of Location Reporting, that location information may also be used by other Google products, including Google Now.
