How experiments work

Experiments may change how Google Search appears. For example, you might get an AI-powered overview at the top of search results. Also, you might get different design layouts than you’re used to. You can turn on multiple experiments at the same time, or try them one at a time.

Learn about the experiments

  • SGE: Find what you’re looking for in faster, easier ways with Search Generative Experience (SGE). When you search with SGE on, you may get AI-powered overviews with helpful info and can ask follow up questions naturally. Learn more about SGE.
  • Code Tips: Get coding tips directly in Search. Simply search for topics across Javascript, Python, and more, and code tips will be displayed.
  • Add to Sheets: Add links from Search to Google Sheets. With Add to Sheets on, hover over a web page search result to add it to a collaborative spreadsheet. This experiment is only available in Chrome on desktop.

FAQs

I turned on the experiment. Why can't I find it?

  • SGE: Not all queries will generate an AI-powered overview in your search results. In this case, your search results won’t include SGE content.
  • Code Tips: Only a subset of queries will show Code Tips where we believe we can provide higher quality responses or suggestions. Currently, the experiment is focused on queries related to Python, JS/TS, C/C++, Java, Kotlin, Go, and shell/bash as well as git, docker, and algorithms.
  • Add to Sheet: Not all results can be added to Google Sheets. Also, this experiment is only available in Chrome on desktop.

How long will experiments be available?

You can find the end date of an experiment on its card on the Search Labs page, though these may change over time.
