What you need
- Android phone.
- Latest version of the Google app
. Get it on Google Play.
- Be 13 or over. If you’re under 18, Search Labs and select experiments are available in the US and in English only.
- A personal Google Account that you manage on your own. For now, Search Labs and its experiments are not available to Google Workspace accounts, including Google Workspace for Education accounts.
Sign up for Search Labs
- On your Android phone, open the Google app
.
- Make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account.
- At the top left, tap the Labs icon
.
- If you don’t find the Labs icon
, it’s currently not available to you. Learn more about Search Labs availability.
- You may need to join the waitlist to access Labs. If so, click Join Waitlist. You’ll get an email notification when experiments are ready for you.
- If you have Google notifications turned on, you’ll get a notification from the Google app.
- If Google notifications are turned off, you’ll get the option to turn them on.
- If you don’t find the Labs icon
- Find an experiment that interests you.
- For more info about an experiment, tap its card.
- Turn the experiment on

- When relevant, read the Terms of Service for the experiment and select I agree if you agree.
- Tap Try an example.
Tip: To check if experiments are ready for you, tap the Labs icon . If you don’t find the option to start experimenting, try again later.
If you're on the waitlist for Search Labs and changed your mind, you can let us know.
- On your Android phone, open the Google app

- Make sure you’re signed in to your Google Account.
- At the top left, tap the Labs icon

- Tap Leave waitlist

Turn on Google notifications
To get notified through the Google app when experiments are ready for you, Google notifications must be turned on. If you didn’t turn them on when you signed up for Search Labs, to turn them on, follow these steps:
- On your Android phone, open the Google app

- At the top right, tap your Profile picture or initials

- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on All Google notifications.
FAQs
What happens after I join the waitlist for Search Labs?If you’re on the waitlist for Search Labs and experiments are ready for you, we’ll notify you based on how you joined the waitlist.
- If you joined the waitlist through the Google app on your Android phone or iPhone, we’ll notify you by email if you opted in to receive email updates about Search Labs and send a notification from the Google app if you have notifications turned on.
- If you joined the waitlist through Chrome on desktop, we’ll notify you by email if you opted in to receive email updates about Search Labs.
When you get access to Search Labs, you’ll be able to choose which experiments you want to turn on. You’ll be able to turn them off and on at any time, and you’ll also have the opportunity to provide feedback.
If you joined the waitlist for Search Labs and changed your mind, you can leave the waitlist.
The amount of time you'll wait may vary.
While we can’t share exact dates for when Search Labs will be available in your country, we're currently expanding outside of the US.
When you turn on an experiment, you’ll need to accept Terms of Service that are specific to that experiment. These also apply:
Before we make generative AI tools available to Google Workspace for Education accounts, especially those for users under 18, we want to make sure:
- School administrators have transparency and control over how students access generative AI with their school accounts.
- School staff and faculty are informed about generative AI tools so they can make decisions that align with their school policies. This includes giving school staff and faculty time to test generative AI tools in their school environment.
As we work on this, we'll continue to work with the education community to explore new ways to bring helpful tools and functionalities to educators and students.
