I really think that a smartwatch can by a very important tool in our lives, is the Android wear team can support nfc for more than just payments u can use your watch to different settings on the phone like silent mode, navigation, Bluetooth paring and more but the only way it stop open that option, on watchs that have nfcbmaybe a app like Tasker or nfc tools can give the freedom to do whatever you want with your nfc antenna on your "smartwatch" so please make that happen

Hey Amir,

Yeah, I agree that it would be a useful feature.  Many watches still do not include NFC though, so there is probably less emphasis to design this given the lack of uniformity across the platform.  Have you tried any third-party apps to see if they are able to launch particular actions when having your watch come in contact with an NFC tag?  You can also make your suggestion to the AW team through the Help and Feedback section of the AW app on your phone.

Hm, so why are you wondering about this if you aren't able to use it on your device?  Some watches with NFC are able to recognize the tags, but they didn't used to be able to react to them.  I had the original Sony AW watch a while back and it had NFC built-in - even before the chip was enabled by the OS.  It would vibrate when held up to an NFC tag as if to recognize that it were there, but I didn't have it programmed to act on it at all.  I bet a third-party app could make this happen - and like you mentioned, Tasker would be a good place to start probably.

I also very much miss this feature from Wear OS. I could even live with the short battery life on smart watches today if I at least could use it to read NFC tags.

Please Google, do make this happen! Don't limit NFC to just payments!

I don't feel that the point of its not on all that Kevin made so defending less emphasis is really valid. Its like saying oh there are phones without cameras lets not support camera features at all except the native camera app.

Even if it was there with a warning its like new features that come in javascript (in terms of browser adoption) or enforcing people to use the latest major update to android which would block off a lot of older users till their phones are updated. Its better to give more power to the developers so they can make as much fun stuff as possible.

If the devices readers are incapable of doing it then that's one thing but google should make a statement themselves as to why or just enable the feature because I cant think of a logical reason not to let it as its just an extra tool. People just keep asking is this possible and whatever but google doesn't seem to have responded to any of them saying why or if it even doesn't work.

At the place I work we had some idea to use this as one small part of a larger project but its not possible atm even if its just the OS.

Hey Alistair (and Daniel and Amir),

I agree that it would be nice for Wear OS to support NFC tags, but supporting that would likely require not-insignificant changes to how Wear OS operates. Currently, NFC is only active while the Google Pay app is open and in the foreground. That doesn't mean that it can't be done though.

I'd encourage you to use the Menu > Help & feedback > Send feedback option in the Wear OS app on your phone to submit your request directly to the Wear OS development team. Be sure to give them very specific information about how you'd like to be able to use NFC tags with your watch. Requests that include detailed notes about why you want a feature are likely to garner more support than those that just say "I want this."

Cheers,
John

Hey John,

I will do that, the main part I was wanting it for was to be able to pair it with info or enable it at specific times upon request at the minimum for apps to use. My friend has some nfc chips implanted in his body as well as we have more nfc enabled devices it could work with which could be fun to use and would bring just more functionality to the OS as a whole.

Thanks for the suggestion. The reason I messaged there was it seemed the latest thread which was asking about it at least and it seems like quite a big request people wanted. I mean if it was in the OS itsself to be able to use wifi nfc tags or import contacts to a phone that would be 1 overall upgrade but not as important in my opinion as you could just make a scanner app to lessen what is in the OS if needed. Or it could just be enabled when the screen is on from a button press who know :P

I will go into better detail in a feedback request. I mostly see it as a useful tool which is the same reason I got a smart watch in the first place.

My Fossil Q has NFC but the only thing I can do with it is Google Pay. If only developers can allow watches to emulate NFC tags.

The only access from wearos is the payments ATM. That's what we want changed.

I also think integration of nfc other than payments would allow several very interesting applications, including in the healthcare and elderly care markets
